I'm on the waiting list at Vermont. Anybody else there? I was just wondering if anybody has heard anything....

And for those taking up more than one acceptance, please stop cramping our style for those still trying to get in!...ha, ha, ha.

I'm on the waitlist--I found out on 4/22. I guess we can call on May 1st to find out the position.

Im in the same boat...anxiously awaiting May 1st so I can see what my position is. In the past the waitlist has been kind with this school so let's hope that this year is not an exception...

Does anyone on the UVM waitlist have any other acceptances? I'm curious to see what schools you would withdraw for UVM. I'm debating (prematurely) if I would choose UVM over Chicago Med.

Yeah, I'm sitting on a U of Minnesota-Minneapolis that is starting to look really good now that they waived non-resident tuition. I'm going to call on May 1 and see how disappointed I feel if I'm third-tiered, then I'll have a clearer idea of where my loyalties are.

i have two acceptances and am going to give up my waitlist position tomorrow.

I am on the UVM waitlist, and I have other acceptances. I will withdraw from UVM shortly. Great town (went to undergrad nearby) and great school, but I just couldn't stomach the cost.

I'm also on the UVM waiting list, dated 2/13. I do have other acceptances. just waiting for 5/1 to roll around now.

Would anyone else care to say which med schools you would go to over UVM? I think I would like Chicago Med better just because the area is more culturally diverse....and I feel guilty staying on the waiting list. But Vermont is closer to Boston where my boyfriend is, and I think it is considered a better school, so I'm going to wait and see waht happens. What schools are you accepted to that you would go to over UVM?

Thanks to all those replying or those who have a made a firm decision on deciding what medical school is for them. I just wish people would understand what it's like to be in our situation where we are just praying for one medical school acceptance.

For those on the waiting list with me, let's hold tight as the ship goes through some rough waters....

Lionel

Doctora Foxy...I just sent you a PM which should hopefully answer some questions you were having about CMS.

Hello? Anyone out there?

Did anyone try calling? I left a message on the main phone number and I sound like a psycho premed on it. Wonderful. Should I be calling Mary Keefe instead? Last time I left her a message, she called me back 2 minutes later.

I got through to Vermont at 9:15 AM.
Without me asking, they said that they are expecting ALOT of movement this year (just like last year.)

I was so tired when I called I think I left the wrong phone number--I mixed my cell and home numbers together. <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> Maybe I'll call back....Did you call Mary Keefe or the main admissions number?

I called the main number for admissions and got right through. The woman with whom I spoke said they are definitely expected a lot of waitlist movement, similar to last year. At my interview, the Dean said they entered the 3rd tier last year, so it looks good for most anyone on the waitlist...good luck!

I called the University of Vermont this morning to find out my location on the waiting list....I'm in the middle-3d tier.

I know that last year they went through nearly the entire waiting list. However, that was then, this is now. Every year is different and this year is no exception.

Anybody else stuck in the same boat as I am?

Holler back...

Lionel

ouch I'm on the lower tier. I might just withdraw...

I called today and left a message, but then I decided to call back a couple of hours later because I couldn't take the suspense! May from admissions answered and told me that I'm on the top third!!!

I know this sounds gratuitous but this is the first bit of good news I've heard -- I haven't been accepted anywhere yet and UVM was the first school I interviewed at (4/9).

Doctora Foxy, at least you're already in and can definitely say you're going to med school next year. I'm sure you'll get into even better schools than UVM.

So anyone else who's waiting -- call them! Oh, I forgot to tell you, they gave me a call back around 5-6 hours later, so you don't have to wait long to find out. :)

singing doc, that's GREAT news! It's almost definite that you'll get in! :D Good luck!

Hey singing doc--
that's great news! we might be classmates!
i'm still trying to decide-- let me know if you get in and if you plan to go!

I'm not going to, I changed my mind...since I'm at the bottom, I'm not really holding anyone else back, so it won't hurt anyone if I sit on it and see what happens. I thought I would have gone to Finch anyway, but if given the decision I would give it a lot of thought. :)

:D Well, I called this morning and found out that I'm in the top 1/3rd of the waitlist also! I really loved the school and it's my second choice, aside from UCSD (still waiting to hear back from them)! Maybe I'll see you some of you next year. :) The school is incredibly beautiful and the town/city of Burlington is pretty nice. The only real gripe I had with the school (aside from weather - hey, I'm from sunny CA and have only been in snowy weather twice in my life!) was the apparent lack in patient diversity. How did other people feel about this? I agreed with Dr. Foxy way back when in the thread when she was debating b/w chicago and UVM b/c of diversity issues. If you guys have some advise, I'd love to hear it. Good luck to us all . . . and I hope that their waitlist movement is kind to us!

Oh, yeah. Everytime I call that school, it is impossible to talk to an actual person with that whole "dial 3 for the admissions office" since it is automatically directed to an answering machine. So, I just called and dialed line "2" because I knew that it was the only one that had a real live person I could talk to. I just told the person on the phone that I knew I called the wrong extension but I haven't been able to reach anyone and talk to them directly. She was so cool about it and looked up my status for me. I suggest that if people can't get to the adm. officer to look up their files, just do what I did. It saves a lot of time (long-distance call wise), waiting, and grief!

Options my dear Foxy, options.

I was on the UVM waitlist last year, called on May 1st, and was told that I was at "the top of the top 1/3" and that my chances were good. I don't remember who I talked to. Anyway, in the beginning of July I received an acceptance letter dated June 10th, with the usual instructions of responding in a week with a deposit, etc. According to the date on the letter, it was too late for me to respond anyway. I sent them a letter withdrawing that same day, explaining in it the belated delivery of the letter so that they didn't think I just sat on the acceptance and so that they knew it had arrived late. One day later, I received a letter from them that since I "have not replied" to their offer, they were withdrawing my application and notifying "the board" (who's "the board", well, I don't remember exactly what it said, but it was sort of a "We are withdrawing your application and you are grounded for a week" reprimand letter. I called and explained the situation, they understood, and it was all good. The point - stay on top of calling! I was already in at my first choice, so losing the acceptance against my will wasn't a big deal to me, but I wouldn't want it to happen to anyone else.

For those wondering why I left my name on the list at UVM when I knew I wasn't going to go there: I passed out during the interview. It's a long story, but I interviewed in September, was ill, etc. and at the end of my interview I stood up to shake their hands and passed out cold. I somehow sprained my ankle on the way down and left the interview on crutches. After I was accepted where I wanted to go, my application became an experiment, "Can one FALL DOWN at the interview and still get accepted?" Wouldn't you have wanted to know??

Anyway, good luck w/UVM, and keep on top of them, call every two weeks or something.

I'm letting go of my UVM acceptance today. I hope it goes to one of you deserving SDNers! Have fun in VT. love quaileggs

Interesting. I just called, and I'm on the lower third of the waitlist. As previously mentioned, I'm going to withdraw. Too bad there aren't that many people behind me to benefit from this. :)

Hey this is my first post :) I'm also waitlisted at UVM. I called yesterday and found out that I am in the middle 3rd. She said they expected a lot of movement this year like last year, but that they couldn't know for sure because each year it's different. She wouldn't give me any details on when I might hear... but she said that if we call after May 15th they'll have a better idea. Good luck to everyone!

:)

Okay, top second tier, hmmn what to do. I don't want to be a high hat, but I have to hold on to this one for a couple of weeks until I find out if I pass a biochem prerequisite for another school. If I do pass, though, I think I'm out. Good luck to all the SDNers here--this appears to be a great waitlist to be on!

It'd be interesting having you as a medical school classmate. :)

If you need any biochem help, let me know.

Thanks, Kut. And thanks for the biochem "inside info" you gave me. I never knew the TCA cycle worked in the reverse in Australia. That's so interesting, and something my prof never even brought up. I'll be ready for that final now!

long time reader, but first time poster:

Does anyone have an idea of how many actual people are on the UVM waiting list? ie: how many people are in each tier?

Just curious in trying to understand the waiting process...

I am new to SDN so bare with me. From what I heard, they have about 150 folks on this thing. Broken up into 3rds. That seems like an awful lot. It seems the thinds people mentioned so far are consistent with what I heard. But really who knows until May or later...Hope that helps.

hey guys--
i have a question for all of you-- it seems like many of the students who end up going to UVM have taken a couple of years off before going into med school there. how many of you are coming straight from college/grad school vs. taken a couple/several years off?

i'm still deciding, but i wish you guys the best on the waiting list. :) hang in there!! =-)

I took off a few years. Grad school, and work for about three years. Hopefully I'll get in.

Is there anyone else who has already declined their acceptance, or like me is going to withdrawl within the next two weeks?

entering straight after undergrad (if accepted). undergrad time was 5 years instead of the normal 4, so i'll be 23 years old :)

yea-- another person who is thinking of going to UVM straight after undergrad!!

i am about to graduate as well (4 yrs of undergrad).

i feel kinda young though, but that's all good!

heartsurgeon--Yes..see above

 •••••If I go to UVM I would be going directly after graduation. :) I feel very young--I just turned 21 in December! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

Eight more days until we get an inkling of what is to come for waitlistees at UVM and everywhere else? Just wondering though, it seems we are going to have to wait long after 5/15 for anything substantive regarding moving in off the waitlist right? Anyone?

If the admissions office predicts ALOT of movement I think that we can trust their prediction. After all they have been doing this for MANY MANY years.

hey waiting4uvm,

what is your perspective on UVM? just trying to figure out what different people think...

thanks! :)

johne-- I agree with you to trust the adm. ofc. on what they say. A staff person told me she had been there for 9 years--and said things were looking good for waitlistees. However, the skeptic inside of me keeps thinking each year is different--so I wait patiently.

dynamic-- Hmm...my perspectives on UVM. Well I know its not rural. I had a friend who interviewed at UVM and said it was rural--LOL! Aside from Burlington, which is not a bad place to study--the school itself is making an effort to move its curriculum to become more innovative--some say not, but I think so. The price tag is steep though--no doubt about it. It really comes down to what other choices you have, then compare.

Hi everyone, this is my first post since I didn't know about this forum until recently. I'm also waitlisted at UVM and have made them my first choice if accepted. Here are some stats I've gathered that may be of interest to you:

According to the MSAR 2000-2001 published by AAMC, "468 people were interviewed at Vermont and 152 acceptances were offered to obtain a class of 94 for the 1998-1999 entering class" (I know my source is out-dated, does anyone have last year's figures?)

In addition, according to the AAMC website <a href="http://www.aamc.org/data/facts/famg22001a.htm" target="_blank">http://www.aamc.org/data/facts/famg22001a.htm,</a> 76 Vermont residents applied to medical school and 24 matriculated within their own state in 2001. The same chart indicates that 14 Vermont residents matriculated elsewhere but it doesn't say whether they were also offered a seat at UVM.

Still with me? Okay. Assuming they had approximately the same number of students as prior years (i.e. around 94), then 71 of their students were from out-of-state (94-23=71). If they offer ~152 acceptances, then 58 of them were taken off the waitlist (152-94=58).

These numbers would be more meaningful if I had last year's stats. In any case, the applicant rate HAS continued to decline this year. Last year Vermont had 20% fewer applicants according to another chart posted on the same website <a href="http://www.aamc.org/data/facts/famg12001a.htm" target="_blank">http://www.aamc.org/data/facts/famg12001a.htm.</a> If they accepted people from the bottom tier of the waitlist last year as many of you have suggested in your comments, they are likely to do the same this time around.

Good luck to everyone and best wishes. :)
