UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT--WAITING LIST

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey everyone!! :)

Congrads to 1st Rain Drop!!! :)

I am very excited and can't wait to meet all of you guys.
I haven't received my orientation packet yet though... was it a big packet of info?

I am thinking about moving into the Trinity housing... at least for the first year. If you are thinking about living there, I would hurry and call for a contract and info because I heard the spaces might go quickly (it is available for both grad and med students). If I remember correctly, I think the contact person is Alison Moll (check the UVM people search). I am thinking about going over there (to the Trinity housing)to check it out this week... apparently it's suppose to be nice and big rooms, but their interpretation of "nice and big" might be different than mine. :D I'll let you know the scoop later. :)

Can someone fill me in on this 'ropes' course? My packet was mailed to a different address that I won't be able to get to until next weekend. Thanks.

The ropes course is supposed to be a bonding experience for the med students. There are teams of people who perform trust games together and then eventually climb very tall trees or ropes or stuff like that. You wear harnesses and the groups are put together with people in your anatomy dissection group.

Congrats 1st RainDrop!! Wasn't that the best voice mail you've every received??

Where did you find out about Trinity housing?? Any one have any info about how far from campus, price range, etc?

Are people going to have cars during first year??

Congrats to everyone! Can't wait to meet you all!

Glad to hear some of you are thinking about Trinity as well.

dr.bc--I will be bringing my car--Trinity has parking for $107 a year--that's a steal. Housing if $570 includes all utilities and phone upto 4 hours or so. It;s location, I'm not sure exactly where--I heard its on Pearl Street???

Operadoc, please let us know your assessment of the dorms when you go take a look.

And that Ropes course, well--might as well do it if the rest of the anatomy group is--I'll gauge it then.

Also, Anyone thiniking of the Medical Student Learning Group Pilot?

Thanks everyone. You guys are great. UVM class of 2006 is going to be awesome! :)

Hey!

Sorry, wasn't able to make it to the grad dorm this week... I still need to figure out the exact address. :D

About cars-- I would say YES!! Public Transportation is pretty non-existent here... I just got a car a couple of weeks ago and I'm grateful I can finally get around. :)

Hope you guys are enjoying the summer and YES-- UVM Class of 2006 is going to ROCK!!! :)

•Congrats 1st Rain Drop!! That is awesome! :D Where were you on the waitlist, first tier?•••••Thank you Jedi4. Yes I was waitlisted on tier one. I kept calling and writing to them though; plus I was on the brink of offering to donate a few internal organs (kidney, liver, etc.) hehe. Luckily things worked out and I'll be starting school in one piece. <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

Well it looks like your persistance paid off, congrats again. :) I just called the admissions office today, and she said that there hasn't been much movement this year, and that there hasn't been ANY movement in the last week... but that they are still in the first tier. :-( So it's not looking so good for me, since I'm in the second tier. But I guess you never know, nothin to do but wait.

yeah, sure.... i couldn't send you an email or anything because your PM option isn't working... send me an email. :)

Hang in there Jedi - still over a month away and waitlists still are moving.

I was wondering if the UVM SDN crowd wanted to have a preshow get together on the 9th or 10th. Any takers, lemme know.

After much deliberation and loads of uncertainties, I am giving up my position at UVM. I don't know if I'm making the right decision-I hope I am, but I just want those of you who are waiting to know that there will be a position opening up. I loved UVM-the whole atmosphere and feel, but I'm opting for a city school mainly because of the diversity. Soo, good luck. :

Hang in there Jedi4 and KEEP CALLING the admissions office. Remember that UVM accepts people within the first two weeks of school too, so don't give up hope. Should there be more movement near the start of classes, the more they are likely to take people who are committed and ready to move with short notice. I sincerely hope you get in, good luck.

Kutastha, if everybody decides to get together sooner count me in.

Dino, I'm sure you just made someone very VERY happy. Good luck and we'll miss you.

I just got back from Burlington and can't believe I finally found a place. I stopped by the admissions office (which moved since I was there last) and wasn't greeted with smiles. Oh well. I'm sort of starting to warm up to this cross-country move though. See you kids in August.

HI guys,

Just wanted to let you know that I will be withdrawing from the waitlist at UVM - I was in the top 1/3rd - and so hopefully my spot will really help others. Good luck to you guys! I know everyone here deserves it and I wish you all the best. :)

Hey guys!

kutastha-- congrads on finding a home. I'm happy to hear that your search ended successfully and
here's a Smiley from Vermont (to replace the smiles that you didn't receive). :)

for those of you who are withdrawing from the waiting list-- good luck to you where ever you end up! :)

for those of you who are still waiting-- keep calling and hang in there!

and to all of you-- Hope you are enjoying the summer!!! :) See you guys in a month and one day!!

Thanks so much to all of you for the encouragement, I really appreciate it. :) And to those who have withdrawn, I hope you have a great time wherever you've chosen, and thanks for letting us know.

I'm going to keep calling the admissions office, but as of now I have to plan for moving to Detroit to go to Wayne State. It would be totally hectic to move all the way out there (I live in NY), and then pack everything up and move to VT and start classes late etc., but I'll do it. I just hope it doesn't come to that!

When are you all moving to Burlington?

Have you written a letter stating you would definitely go to Vermont and rescind all other acceptances? Sometimes this can help.

I'm leaving CA on August 3rd by car, and hoping to get into Burlington on the 7th.

I did fax a letter to that effect, hopefully it'll still be effective... I wish I could find out how many people are in each tier. At least a ball park...

I wonder if it would be helpful to send them another letter of recommendation or something that might bump me up on the list...

is it really possible to change your rank by writing a letter of interest? I was under the impression that at SLU it was impossible to change your position on the alt. list and assumed that UVM was the same. I don't feel comfortable writing a letter of intent to UVM because it is not my top choice; I loved the school but would without question go to Arizona (in-state tuition!), USC, or OHSU over UVM. that aside, has anyone heard any news lately?

Yeah, I didn't write a letter of intent anywhere else, just UVM because that's my first choice so I meant it. As for whether it actually has any effect, I have no idea. I got in another school off the waitlist and didn't send them one thing or even call in once... so I have a feeling it doesn't matter, but at the same time it can't hurt. I hope. ;) LOL

"I'm leaving CA on August 3rd by car, and hoping to get into Burlington on the 7th."

Oh, I did that drive not too long ago when I moved back to NY from LA... it's a long drive. :)

Jedi4-- that does seem like a LONG trip... I've driven from Chicago to Boston and that was quite the trip... I can't imagine going from LA to Vermont. However, I'm sure that it will be really cool seeing different parts of the country. Hope you have a ton of fun and be careful. :)

Chicago to Boston... isn't that only like 10 hours? ;) I know what you mean though, I drove from LA to Chicago a few months ago and I was very happy to finally get there!

I am in the top third of the waitlist and will be withdrawing tomorrow as I found out that I got into UA today. good luck to those waiting; I'm sure you would have been great classmates:)

Congrats annabanana on getting into UA! :) And thanks so much for letting us know that you're withdrawing from the UVM list... in these suspenseful days any little bit of info is greatly appreciated. :D Good luck at UA!!

Is anyone else here on the boards still waiting for UVM?

I am on the top third of the waitlist at UVM, also. However, I am going to OHSU, so if my name is called I will not accept. Hopefully those farther down the list will still have a chance. I would have thought the list would have moved more by now:confused: . Good luck everyone.

You should call them up and take your name off the list now.

I finally found an apartment in Burlington. But unfortunately I will not be able to move in until the weekend before school starts. Eeeek! So much for settling down ahead of time...

P60001, since you know you're definitely not going to UVM, could you call and have your name removed from the list to help those of us who are on the list below you? At this late stage, even one day more of a delay makes a difference (like if they have to leave you a message and you get it and call them back the next day). So if you could please call them and have your name taken off the list it would be much appreciated by those of us hoping to get in. Thanks!

1st Rain Drop, congrats on finding a place! Moving in the weekend before classes start shouldn't be bad... it gives you a few days to get moved in and settled, and it'll be fun to jump right into it. Let's hope. ;)

1st Rain Drop is lucky - I'll be in Burlington the 7th, but my stuff may not arrive til the day of orientation!

Anyone else taking the Biochem exemption exam on the 14th?

What biochem exemption exam??

There was a handout that came with the orientation packet that said an exemption exam for the biochem course was being offered for incoming students on August 14. It's also mentioned on the two-week schedule included in the packet.

Na, I'm not all that lucky. I'm flying into Burlington on August 10th because my apartment won't be vacant until then. I just hope the airlines don't have any delays or cancellations!

I'm also considering the Biochem exemption exam. Lippencott's Biochem review book has been very helpful although it doesn't have a comprehensive practice exam at the end. We don't have much to lose by taking it other than the exam fee and cost of review materials which we would have purchased one day anyhow, but I'm still very worried about all the clinical correlations tested on it. That material is overwhelming and all new to me so I really doubt I'd pass. Anyways, do you know how long the exam is, how many questions are on it, and what it means to score above 50 percentile? I called the NBME but they refused to share.

125 questions for two hours. It's a scaled score, so leaving answers blank may not hurt you. 50th percentile means that you've done better than 50% of people taking the test. I'm not sure what 50% they're referring to (just us test-takers, or last year's test takers?).

I'm using the Lippincott NMS book, which has questions at the end of every chapter. Seems very handy as a review. Good luck.

It should reflect the average biochem score of those who passed the USMLE within the past few years, not of current test takers. Best of luck to you too Kutastha. Btw, I think we concurrently attended the same undergrad.

hey guys!

yes, I also received the info about the biochemistry exemption exam, but I don't think I am going to take it.... I will be on vacation and spending time with family the week before school starts, so I probably won't have much time to study... I wish you (those of you who are taking it) a ton of luck though! :) Be sure to enjoy the rest of the summer too! :)

So we have to score better than half those students? That doesn't seem so bad.

What year did you graduate UCSD?

So if you pass the exam then you don't take the biochemistry course during the first year? Do you take a different course instead, or you just have fewer classes??

Sorry to ask so many questions about this, I didn't get the packet/info about this since I haven't been accepted (yet!). ;)

Are there any other tests??

There are no other tests that I am aware of at the moment. The Biochem course runs from August all the way to mid-Feb, so if you pass it you'll have more time to invest in other subjects such as Anatomy and Histology. You're also not required to take a different course although you always have the option of taking up to three undergrad courses while in med school. I wonder if they offer ice skating... hm...

Kutastha, I graduated in '98.

Wow, so if you pass the biochem test you just have a lighter courseload... interesting.

If I get in... I'm definitely going to take the test just so I have the option, but I kind of wish they didn't allow you to get out of it because I think people who take it (again) will be much better off than those who don't. Solidifying the knowledge. I dunno... I love biochem and of all the classes I'd be most excited about biochem... but you can't really pass up getting out of a class and lightening up your courseload.

Anyways... not an issue unless I get in... ;)

P.S. By the way, 1st Rain Drop, I like the cat in your icon. :) It's a wild cat, right?
