How competitive is University of vermont......? I dont want to waste my money applying if there is little chance of getting in? Also based on what I have seen, there seem to be very little minorities (african american) in the school...

waiting for my interview from there also

Are you talking about dental school or medical school? Your avatar indicates pre-dental, but you are posting in pre-allo...

Anyway, UVM seems to be about as competitive as any other medical school (i.e. 10000 applicants for ~100 spots). One bonus is that it is friendly to OOS applicants, unlike many other state schools. I get the impression that living in Vermont is a turnoff for many applicants, so if you are willing to move there than you might have an advantage.

As for diversity, Vermont is a pretty white state, so your patient population is pretty homogenous. I don't know about the med students though.

On another note. Anyone already have an interview at UVM and recommend an affordable place to stay? The cheapest I have found is $105/night (interviewee rate) at Doubletree (with shuttle to and from the airport). The Wyndham apparently doesn't have an interviewee rate anymore (even though on interview feedback people stayed there for $80/night)

i was born right there in burlington vermont, so i figured that'd help me, but i think i'm on hold right now, i have this message when i log in to the site:

Your file is complete and has been preliminarily reviewed. You are within a pool of applicants from which an interview may be extended. Please note that this does not guarantee you will be offered an interview and you may not see an update to your status for several months.

booo 🙁

same here

not born in VT, though.

Anyone know any info on this (i.e. what does this really mean?)?

many people (myself included) were put on this "hold" and then offered an interview a few days later...

so dont lose hope just yet

how long did it take to complete the preliminary review?

how long did it take to complete the preliminary review?

less than a week for me... but i cant be sure b/c i didnt check the status every day...

anyway i wouldnt worry it seems very random... there are schools i have been complete for a month and no word where other ppl have invites after 10 days...

you can drive yourself crazy making comparisons... this process is stressful enough so don't write yourself off at any school until you get that official rejection letter

I had a quick turnaround from the UVM "hold" pile, just 1 or 2 days. Other people have been there for a week or two. It sounds to me like they they review a bunch of applications en masse and put them alli in the hold pile when they are done.
Then they likely look at them again together and decide who to offer interviews to.

are there any good mountains near the school? i absolutely love the snow and mountains and am a snowboarder. I wish it snowed all year!!

UVM stands for universitas viridis montis (university of the green mountains). If you are a snowboarder, you would probably be in heaven if you went there.

mine says:

We have received all application materials that you have submitted. Your file is UNDER PRELIMINARY REVIEW. The review of your file may take several (6-8) weeks.

Once the review is complete your status will be updated and you will be notified via the Online Applicant Center.

Please continue to check your status periodically through the Online Applicant Center. We appreciate your patience!

and i think i was done on august 20. so maybe in 2-3 more weeks ill hear something (good or bad), i guess.

Yeah, mine said that for like one day, and then it changed from "UNDER PRELIMINARY REVIEW" to "under a preliminary review", and then a day later the whole "we like you, but we don't like you like you".

i have been under preliminary review since aug 28

bah

I have been under preliminary review since about august 20th.

Mine was put 'under preliminary review on 9/6, and it changed to 'Hold' today.

Anyone interview at UVM recently and can give some advice?

is that a joke? there is good skiing and snowboarding in VT and northern VT (where burlington is) especially.

Ben and Jerry's factory..just about an hour drive away from campus..LOL

Really? Cause Vermont itself actually comes from the words green and mountain in French.

Vert = green
Mont = mountain

Interesting...UVM is from the latin (it is trivia they like to ask apparently), but I didn't know about the root for Vertmont. Neat.

yeah i did hear that they have asked that in the interview... it is not really a fair question but it gives a good idea of how much research you did 🙄

I was a latin major, so I had better know!

Stowe is probably the best one near Burlington (~45 minute drive), but Okemo and Stratton are some really good ones in the south.

Killington is by far the best resort in the state, and is consistently ranked among the top ski areas on the east coast. Perhaps I'm biased though, I am from the area.

I hear there are excellent bike trails in the area around the lake. Anybody have firsthand experience?

Is it taking a long time for anyone else's letters to be uploaded at UVM? I submitted over a month ago and my letters were uploaded by Virtual Eval over a month ago. Is it worth calling to see what happened or should I just hang tight?

thanks!

My sis lived there, and yes there are awesome places around the lake... couple of miles. Plus, there is also boating, snowboarding/skiing, etc... all the outdoors sports are easily accessible.

^^I'm in the same situation as you...sent my letters via VE over three weeks ago and still says "* Pre-Professional Advisor or Committee Letter (Yes) Not Received"
