I am deciding between Rush Medical College and University of Washington — Seattle campus. I was accepted to UW off the WL yesterday, so I kinda already had my mind set on attending Rush, especially since it’s half the cost of UW. Is the prestige of UW worth giving that up? I have to decide by this Friday.

Rent would be covered by a family member so those cancel out. My brother also said he’d cover the difference if I did choose UW. I just was getting pretty excited to go to a new city and the Rush student body is younger and seems like a really fun bunch. Also, the WWAMI rotations as a POC is a really big negative imo. We are required to rotate in rural locations where lots of the population just don’t like people like me.

I’m conflicted af. I guess I could always go to Chicago for residency.. what y’all think??

Rush

Pros:
50% scholarship
Social justice mission
Rotations at Cook County
Spanish elective offered
Chicago seems fun
P/F but internally ranked
Don’t need a car

Cons:
Flipped classroom (honestly I’m kinda dumb tho so this may be a pro)
Cold af winters
Expensive COL

University of Washington

Pros:
T10
Research opportunities
Alma mater
Family/friends all live here

Cons:
WWAMI rotations in super rural areas, moving around a lot
Seattle is not as diverse
Rent is also crazy
Need a car (mom would buy tho)

Seems like you prefer Rush based on pros/cons and really wanna explore a new city (Chicago is every bit as fun as it seems, but also oppressively cold in the winter lol).

There's always the possibility of matching back to a residency program in Seattle if you really wanna settle down in that area. Plus it'd be nice to expand your network even more, since you are from the Seattle area and went to college there. Just my 2 cents, good luck deciding!

UW Seattle. If you look at the residency program director ranking, UW is number #2 whereas Rush is #59-60 (mid-tier). Given the prestige, I think UW will open a lot more opportunities to match with anywhere you want to go (including Chicago) than Rush vice versa. Also, since you are in-state, you are at a better advantage than other students on average in transitioning to medical school and the cost of living would be a lot cheaper for you thanks to your family support.
