University of Washington vs. University of Minnesota - Twin Cities

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This is a tough one because, in my opinion, they're pretty similar. The money is a big factor, but if you really want to stay in PNW for the rest of your life, why leave? Also, TC has just as high a cost of living as Seattle.

I don't think going to Minnesota over UW is going to increase your chances of an east coast residency should you desire one (but, again, why do you want an east coast residency if you want to be a PNW lifer??). If you really are worried about that, you can always do aways outside of the west coast to get your foot in the door so it makes you competitive for non-west coast residencies.

From what I see, your case is very much a what-does-your-gut-tell-you situation. I don't see any pros/cons weighing heavily in favor of one school or the other.

Dream school
this is it go to Washington. its better overall and sup[port is necessary to get through the difficulties plus you don't have to uproot your life. with how prestigious Washington is, i don't think you'll have a hard time finding a residency

UMN students will not ice you out I think! Congrats on the OOS admission and scholarship there. Also consider that their Duluth campus is mission based with a primary care focused, and bring 60 students who started out on that plan as M1's into match. Still, only 60% of those duluth students matched primary care so that doesnt add a ton compared to the entire match list with Duluth's 60 and TC's 180.

Washington is more prestigious, but UMN isnt bad. Passing up a full ride is a pretty tough choice. But it sounds like Washington really offers more of the important stuff you want, like research. You're right about UMN's long m1 and m2 days, most programs arent quite like that now. if I weren't from the area and hadn't been like 10 years old and wondering what it would be like to work at the hospital on their campus, that would really deter me.

full-tuition
Is your dream school worth ~$200,000+ (factored in interest)? If it were me, I’d choose MN. I’d be so comfortable and relieved to have minimal student loan debt. I think a lot of students from MN chose to stay in MN for residency. It seems like if they want to go to a coast it is possible. Might be a little harder compared to Washington.

Honestly, if you are still thinking about it just give the scholarship to another person who would be grateful for it and go to UW.
