If your are annoyed are pissed by the following post then move to California, the greatest state in the entire US. I'm not attacking anyone personally I'm making a critique on state medical schools...

Honestly, California medical schools are better than every other school out there. I mean even if your a state resident its still difficult getting in because everybody from the mid-west, east and the world wants to get into our medical programs. UCLA, UCSF, UCSD just to name a few, hell UCSF can take on some Ivy League Med schools too. I hate it that some other state schools won't even allow non-residents to apply, how would people like it if Cali schools told all non state residents to take a hike? Can't beat the tuition, the outstanding curriculum and research at Cali schools. Some state schools are just a joke compared to the UCs.

Begin the war....now!

This is intended to as a forum to discuss state schools and ultimately come to the conclusion that Cali kicks ass in more ways than one, California Love!

i wouldnt really care to make this post a big issue, but I do agree that ca state schools should not really let in anyone from out of state (unless compelling reason), since that is pretty much the way it works with other state schools; we pay the taxes, we should be going to the schools

excellent point haybrant, our taxes unfortunately are higher than other states too, hell by the time one gets to apply to medical school his taxes have paid for a full four years of medical school compared to the low tax rates of other states.

I honestly think a Proposition should be made to not allow non state residents and if this is a big if they are accepted their tuition should be the same as if going to a private medical school, you know around 50 to 60 grand a year, while state residents only pay 10 to 14 grand. That ought to scare some away from applying.

yeah, the privates can do whatever they want, but SF and LA need to get their acts together. Close the door on the out-of-staters 👍

You know what? This thread sucks. Those of us that live in states where the opposite is true (State school sucks) have different burdens to bear, but they are burdens nonetheless.

I'm from Nevada, and Nevada is not ranked in USNews at all, however, there are only 52 spaces in the entire state for the entering class. Tell me that's not a lose-lose situation.

And you're calling other state schools "a joke" by comparison? You know, this is really rude and mean, and it hurts my feelings. I feel that I am a highly qualified applicant and this is just stupid and uncalled for.

yah, the whole calling the other school's stupid is taking away from the meaning of the argument; the other school's are not stupid. Besides, the major reason you are calling cali schools better is b.c our research rankings are higher; that has little to do with the medical education itself. I dont wanna go as far as saying it's all the same b.c access to diff populations and facilities makes a difference, but all med schools train you at the fundamental level to competently care for patients. It isnt as if the state school in wyoming has a bunch of slacker students that drink beer all the time and dont care for their patients

yeah...I never said that they were stupid, I said that the curriculum, research, and I forgot to mention residency matches that other state school provide for the students are a joke compared to the amzing stats of cali schools, sure there are other good state schools but Cali's state med programs are on a whole different level compared to other state schools, so yeah other state schools are a joke when compared to what Cali schools are capable of, its the truth Im not going to budge one bit.

Other state schools aren't stupid but they are not on the same level as Cali schools. Don't go putting words into my thread, thank you.

Hey whiner 🙂 ...at least you HAVE a school in your state. I have one chance for in-state and it's not even in my state (UW - WWAMI).

This post seems like kind of a joke so I don't know why I'm responding to it, but what the hell. UCSF and UCLA are indeed world-class medical schools, but I don't see what's so great about UCSD, UCI, etc. Not that there's anything wrong with those schools, there's just nothing about them that I'm aware of that really sets them apart or makes them so much better than other state schools. Dont get me wrong--I'm sure they're good schools, but not exponentially better than schools in other states; their biggest asset is probably their location, which obviously appeals to a lot of people (although having briefly attended school in Irvine as a teenager I personally would rather rip my eyes out with a rusty hook than live in that god-forsaken plastic suburban wasteland again). Those schools also take basically no non-residents. As for not allowing out-of-staters to apply to any state school, I definitely see your point and largely agree. However, as an Oregon resident my sympathy is limited--our ONLY medical school in the state (OHSU) takes better than half it's class from out of state. At my interview there last week, out of 20 interviewees only 3 were OR residents--and guess where the rest came from? When you all withdraw your apps from OHSU, I'll withdraw mine from UCSF. UCSF and UCLA, the only cali state schools to consider non-residents, still only take ~20% non-residents a year. There are 8 decent to great medical schools in Cali, all of which accept primarily Cali residents; this should be plenty for any state, and would be if California wasn't so hideously overcrowded.

I know, I know: there are so many qualified applicants in Cali they shouldn't even look at non-residents, right? Well, I for one am a little tired of hearing California residents complain about how difficult their schools are to get into. Of course it's true, but you should have known that long before applying, right? You're adults, if you chose to stay in California for your education then you have to deal with the consequences of living in an overpopulated state with many prosperous areas, hence many pre-med students (who largely come from more affluent backgrounds). If you don't like that, you should have moved out of Cali before applying.

don't hate on ucsd - they're ranked above ucla overall by us news.

wow, i think you are really missing the point....besides, you shoulda moved into cali if you wanted to apply to schools here...

lol. That is a ludicrous statement, and your reasoning can be very well turned against you for not moving out of OR sooner. It's the exact same logic. Besides, I doubt anyone is considering moving out of their own state for the purposes of applying 4+ years later; most people don't end up realizing how difficult it is until they actually go through it firsthand. CA schools are insane to get into, and regardless of the fact that some of our schools admit ~20% non-residents 'only,' the admissions statistics for all of our schools are largely above the matriculant national average. It's a basic law of supply and demand. I know plenty of people that applied ONLY to CA schools with 3.5+, 30+ stats, and many of them instead opted for a different career afterwards. I don't understand why they didn't apply to a larger range, but nevertheless, it goes to show you, there is no guarantee for getting into a medical school in this state even if we do have 8 of them.

Oregon huh? The only thing that Oregon has going for it is that pc game "The Oregon Trail" when you beat the game a message pops up and says "your an idiot for going to Oregon instead of California and your destined to have only one state medical school which isn't really jack s**t"

Cali Rules!

it's true, but i think you realize her frustration and or what she was getting at. You're not gonna look a patient in the eye down the road b.c they made no sense about the fact that they dont cap medical malpractice in other states for examples, and say 'Cali Rules!'

Nah not stupid, I can see that you have no interest in Cali med school problems, hell I could care less about New Jersey because its a **** hole. C'mon move on over to California, we're rich! Oh I almost forgot, I hate the annoying Jersey accents also, really whinny!

What can I say lawyers suck, they have a personal vendetta towards doctors. The way things or going now with patient's rights and malpractice insurance in Cali and other states financially medicine will be bull, so all does who are going into medicine are purely dedicated to service and science.

I would just like to add that I do not understand people from cali, therefore, I would have trouble at a cali school. That makes my state school much much better for me.

Total troll, and I know I should leave well enough alone... but I would argue that residents of a few states actually have it WORSE than California in terms of difficulty of med school admissions. Colorado, Utah, Oregon, and Washington instantly come to mind, since there is a paucity of schools in the intermountain west and Pac. NW. Then there are the states with no med school, such as Maine, Rhode Island (Brown doesn't really count), and New Hampshire. I would rank CA as probably around 10th most difficult... yeah, it is no picnic, but there are several schools there and non-state schools seem to admit a lot of CA residents.

Check out avg. GPA & MCAT for matriculants by state:
http://www.aamc.org/data/facts/2004/mcatgpastatemat.htm

Check out % of successful applicants:
http://www.aamc.org/data/facts/2004/2004slrmat.htm

Easiest states? I would say TX, OH, LA, KY, SC, AR, WV are near the top.

Oh, and my state school is ranked higher than most of your CA schools anyways, with a fraction of the population.

Talk about an exaggerator!

You need to step back into reality !!!

The fact that super qualified Californians can't get into their state med schools does not mean that "Cali rules," it means that Cali sux.

FYI

1. Harvard (private)
2. WashU (private)
3. Hopkins (private)
4. Duke (private), UPenn (private)
6. UCSF (public)
7. U Michigan (public)
8. Columbia (private), Stanford (private)
10. U Washington (public), Yale (private)

The difference between UCSF, Michigan, and U. Washington? Negligible.

Actually, Texas has the best state medical schools:

UT-Southwestern HSC
UT-Houston HSC
UTHSC-San Antonio
Texas Tech HSC
Texas A&M HSC
UTMB-Galveston
University of North Texas HSC

-Plus we don't have earthquakes, tsunamis, and liberal wieners....
