I got a waitlist letter today (for a school that only accepts 24) and it is unranked... I get the whole ranked waitlist but how does an unranked waitlist work (besides the numbers)??? Considering that there are only 24 seats... they can't have 24 or greater on the waitlist right???

This waitlist is from my top choice.... but I just got an acceptance from my top-DO choice... It gets confusing here but I'm debating how to handle this since I'm not sure how soon I will know if a spot opens... But here is the dilemma....

Last year I was accepted to TUCOM-NV... I accepted their offer and deposited 2 grand... Now this was me being "safe" and unsure if my Top-DO choice would come through... now that it has... I have to deposit a grand for that school... now since I'm at a waitlist at my Top-MD school I feel confused... I would lose the 2 grand no matter what but how to handle the waitlist, acceptance at my Top-DO, and 2 more schools that I'm waiting for I'm overwhelmed!

I know I sound nuts but I feel that there is no strategy that I can seem to think besides being "safe" once more...

What do you guys think?????? Would a LOI help out in a situation like this to the school I'm waitlisted???

THANKS SDN!

Unranked waitlists usually mean that they take people off the waitlist depending upon how their class fills in May. So, if they end up with 3/4 of the class full, and of that 3/4, the majority are males, then they take more females off the waitlist. Some schools are even really specific and match each candidate that they accept with someone on the waitlist so that they can get the "perfect" class. It definitely wouldn't hurt to send a LOI/update though - I would definitely do it if it's your top choice. At least you'll know that you tried everything.

I'm assuming you can afford to lose the two grand since you were just being "safe" anyway. I suggest that you take the acceptance for the DO school, pay the one grand (I am confused here...how is the deposit 1K? aren't they usually like $100?), and do everything on god's earth to get into your top MD program, that is, if you would much rather go to the MD than the DO. Three grand isnt going to set you back that much in the long run anyway.

Good luck!

Some schools do need to ultimately offer acceptances to more than twice the number of seats in their classes, so I'd say it's likely that the waitlist has more than 24 names on it.

And DO deposits are typically significantly higher than MD deposits.

Thanks...and I assume from context that they are non-refundable (unlike MD deposits)? Are DO schools governed by an organizing body like the AAMC?

DO schools use AACOMAS...

Thanks guys for the answers...

Anymore opinions greatly appreciated 👍
