I am trying to find some people who are definitely going to Uof R to get some information about Rochester and the school. Ifyou will be attending it would be helpful to let me know your impressions of the school and the city. Also what other schools did you withdraw from to attend U of R. If you are a minority student definitely sign as well. It seems U of R doesn't get many URM in a class. Thanks you guys. Get excited about med school.

Hey,

I already started a UofR class of 2008 thread... it's cool if you want this to be the new "official" one or whatever, just wanted to let you know that there's another out there with other responses, etc.

Are you going to be applying to the school, already a student, incoming first-year?

I absolutely love the school. Originally I wanted to go to school in Boston or New England in general, but after interviewing at Rochester, it became my far and away top choice. The students, curriculum, administration, and really everything else about the school are wonderful. As far as the city, it really has a lot more to offer than I originally would have thought. It just seemed very pleasant in a region of the country where you can do outdoorsy things. Also, there seemed to be a pretty decent collection of restaurants (although supposedly there's an inexplicable paucity of Mexican places 🙁 ) There's even a Hungarian place up there. And a Chinese place hilariously named The House of Poon (we actually sent their menu into the Tonight Show headlines and it was on a couple weeks ago!)

Unfortunately, I'm not a minority... white male here.

I already replied to your other thread, but I'll give you some more comments about Rochester here. I absolutely loved the school when I visited. Everyone I met was extremely helpful and friendly. Just watching the students and talking to various people, it's obvious that the medical students are a very close group who have fun together. The curriculum is amazing. There is a committee that collects feedback and constantly makes changes according to what the students say. Also, they make it easier to handle the amount of information coming at you by letting you know the most important concepts. Another thing that really impressed me were the facilities. The hospital is very nice. The tours given don't do it justice. Also, the Medical Research Building is amazing. All the labs are practically brand new and there are some very interesting projects going on.

The cost of living in Rochester is very low. I have an apartment about a block from the school that is only $325 a month! Contrary to popular belief, Rochester has a lot of things to do. There is a lot of culture in Rochester, with many festivals throughout the year. There are plenty of concerts throughout the year in Rochester and the surrounding area. If you need to get away, there's a ferry to toronto, buffalo is only an hour away, and montreal and nyc aren't all that far.

Oh, the schools I withdrew from were Stony Brook, Upstate, and SLU. I withdrew from many others, but that was before a decision was made. Once I was accepted at Rochester I was 99% sure I was going to attend there. Anyhow, I hope to see you in August.
