Just checked the status of my application post interview and it now says "action was taken on your application ....." Good luck to all of you who are patiently waiting for news. This whole process is getting to me and probably a whole lot of you people out there too. Boy, I would like just one acceptance!

GOOD LUCK WMN!! I'm still waiting on their decision regarding an interview...I hope they hook it up with one. I have heard great things about their program!

    WMN-

I've known a couple of people who had that sentence on their status checks and it meant an acceptance. You can call them and ask. They told me over the phone.

WMN: When was your interview? And, I've tried looking for the link on the UW website to check my application status and just cannot seem to find it...any clues you can offer? Hope it turns out well for you. Seattle is a great place.

Yep. I had that exact same sentence saying action had been taken on the 12th of December. I called on the 14th because I knew I would have a hell of a time waiting till the 19th for the mail (that's exactly how long it took and I live in Seattle).

    Hey SMW
Was just about to provide the status check email and you beat me to it. I was at UofW on Friday when the admissions committee started their deliberations for the AK WWAMI applicants. The action note could mean anything as I got the same one last year when I was rejected (hate to snow on the parade here). They are finished with the process for Alaskans now and I am in the awkward position of having to work (indirectly) with one of the docs who is on the admin committee. I really do not want to run into her today - or any day until I know what the outcome is. Believe me , I am not at an advantage because of my professional relationship and I wonder if it is actually a bad thing because she sees me at my worst as well as my best. Good luck - I need to go keep busy before I go totally insane!!!!!

Yeah, I got the same message a couple of days before receiving the rejection letter in the mail. All it means is that they have made a decision, and that it will be mailed to you shortly.

hey I just found out I have been accepted to the alaska wwami program. Does anyone else know yet? I was actually one day out from flying down to philly for a upenn interview. It was actually pretty cool finding out. I had to snowmachine into town to use the phone and I had to chase some moose off the trail and there was alpenglow on the alaska range. It was a clear day too. anyway if there is another alaska wwami let me know.

toledo, you live in Talkeetna? That must be like a dream, living at the foot of Denali. Wow!!!

I sure hope I get into UW and then have a chance to do a rotation up in Alaska. But I'm really not sure how my chances are.

actually I am voting no on incorporation (just got the ballot in the mail today) not because I don't believe it is a good idea but because noone did their homework on the tax base and we probably need to rethink the issue with more research.
I lived by that water/sewer project for a few years and believe me it needs work and money (more than we can get taxing tourists).
As for whomever stopped by for coffee, pretty good huh?

Oops, sorry toledo for the gender confusion, which I have also had my share of on SDN!! (I'm female too) :D

Well, you do almost sound too Alaskan to be real, I must admit!! How are the rest of us AK WWAMI applicants supposed to compete with a female, Iditarod dog-handling, graduate student from Talkeetna?

Hey, when did you move to Talkeetna? My band played at the Fairview just before Christmas.

You are so lucky to know you're in!! I don't have the nerve to call and ask.

No mail for me either yesterday, WMN.

To the bitter end - isn't this what American's call "cruel and unusual punishment?" I like what Michigan did - they tell you right there on the status check page. Pat Fero asked if I had any ideas on how to make the interview process better - maye I will suggest changing the notification method. Doubt if she will listen to me though.
Anyways, my status check said I should hear by 3/1 so we will see what happens. It would be great to be in class with some fellow SDNers. There are only ten of us so it is important to get along. I wish you luck.

Well, I guess I do now! I was debating, because of the money and the fact that I'm inclined toward primary care.

From the first day that I submitted applications those were always tied for 1st choice with Dartmouth a close 2nd. Dartmouth has rejected me so I will withdraw all my other applications (including declining my interview invites at MCPHU and Jefferson in April).

SMW, go with Columbia or OHSU with an NHSC scholarship (loans be damned). Since I've gotten into Mayo I will most likely not apply for NHSC scholarship.

Right now it's looking like Columbia, but I still have a couple more interviews (Mt. Sinai tomorrow and Tufts next week). Plus a bunch of schools I've yet to hear from post interview (like OHSU, for instance). I have to decide which apps to withdraw......and whether to apply for the NHSC scholarship. Do you know how competitive it is? I know how many scholarships they've been giving out, but I don't think I've run across the number of applicants.

I have heard that it is quite competitive (around 7 applications per award) but I know this year they've increased the number of awards and the applicant pool is probably less since the total number of medical school applicants is likely down. I think the key is to show a committment to serving the underserved, willing to cope with challenging situations, and enjoying working with other people not necessarily of your same educational/socioeconomic status.

The loan repayment options are also pretty worthwhile and though you will have to deal without the monthly stipend it still gives you an out if for some reason you decide not to pursue primary care.

Have you received the application for NHSC yet? It's really rather silly and they obviously choose whom to interview directly upon a numeric score according to how you respond.

My mom said it came in the mail, but I haven't seen it yet. So it's pretty obvious how you're "supposed" to answer? I'm still thinking, despite my inclination toward primary care, that it's too risky. The penalties are so horrendous, and what if you decide to specialize?

I wouldn't say it obvious for every questions but for some of them it is painfully obvious how you are supposed to answer.

It is true, if you are not totally dead set on primary care then it is too risky (the triple times repayment).

I think the only way I would have accepted a NHSC scholarship would be if I got into only high-priced schools, i.e., 30,000+ per year.

If I do however end up going into primary care I will probably try for a loan repayment scheme either through NHSC or the Indian Health Service after residency but that's way too far to think about right now.

How does OHSU tution compare with Columbia? And would you get in-state at OHSU? Didn't you say you have family there?
