Since chronic opioids downregulate opioid receptors and may lead to opioid induced hyperalgesia...does any one know how long it takes for opioid receptors to upregulate back to normal and for opioid induced hyperaglesia to resolve after stopping opioids? I suppose it may be related also to how long the patient has been on opioids, but let's say for at least 6-12 months or more? I would guesstimate that it would take several months, but I really do not know.

some animal studies suggest that the changes are actually permanent. In humans normally we see a period about 2 to 3 months after stopping opioids

Some animal studies indicate only one dose of opioids is sufficient to permanently induce hyperalgesia.
