I'm a 2nd sem. Soph. and right now I'm enrolled in Inv. Zoo, and Inv. Zoo lab. As of today I'm not doing very well in either class, and I'm really frustrated and disheartened. I'm trying to decide wether or not to keep them or just drop them and take them again later in my undergrad life. I'm confident that I can pull off a miraculous B in the lecture class, but I've lost all hope with the lab. Is Inv. zoo really that important when it comes to admissions? Also is it frowned upon to have to drop a class and take it over? Anybody with experience in this matter is more than welcome to advise me. My gpa is 3.8, and up to this point I had a 4.0 in the sciences.

if you had a higher GPA, the withdrawl wouldnt be ok but since its only a 3.8 and 4.0 in the sciences, that W will ruin your chances for medical school in the states. i suggest giving up.

I concur with Dr. Huang on this issue. No, you will not get into med school with a W. Also, no one who has gotten into a top med school has ever received a B in Inv. Zoo. Have you ever considered other career options, such as processing mail or telemarketing?

Can you just drop the lab?

Give up!!!! NOOOOOOOOO Neverrrrrr!!! I can just drop the lab and take it over later on. That's really my main idea, to just drop the lab and concentrate on finishing with a B, maybe even an A in the lecture class. I just don't see how come my ability to cut open a grasshopper correlates to my ability to know parts and processes of the human body which I proved I could do via my A in human A&P.

That's where you're wrong. Your ability to cut open a grasshopper directly corrolates to your ability to understand the human body. Hundreds of studies have shown this conclusively (try google). How I trust you as a colleague if you can't even pull an A in Inv. Zoo? (I'd expect a fellow doctor to pull an A++.)

I don't even know what Inv. zoo is 🙁

Inv. Zoo stands for Invertebrate Zoology. Well I guess I really should consider a promising career in urinal cake removals.

As a zoology major, I am guessing it is invertebrate zoology...wild guess, I know...

As for advice? Now, I know this may be shocking to most of you-the B is not going to kill you! At an interview, don't expect to be asked "So, what happened in inv. zoo here? You got a B 😱 ? Please explain that" and for heaven's sake, don't address it in your personal statement. There are worse things that could happen on your application! Roll with it...drop the lab if it is really that awful and retake it at a later date.

Thanks, that makes me feel better about my situation. I know that I'm kind of over-reacting, but it's just been a really long semester, and doubt always seems to creep into your mind during those.

Ya...Thats your best bet. I heard they dont really like W's either though.

If it were me, I would drop the class. As long as you aren't making a habit of dropping classes every semester, you should be fine.

Dropping just the lab is another good idea. Having B's on your transcript won't hurt you expecially if your other grades are so good.

I dropped Chem II. I dropped it becuase I had gotten a B in Chem I and didn't want a B in Chem II, so I took the class during the summer when I could focus on just chemistry. I got an A. I also dropped cal I and retook a slightly easier class (cal for arts & sciences) with a different teacher.

I always felt guilty after I dropped a class. You will feel better about dropping it as time goes on.

So... you're telling me Inv. Zoo doesn't stand for "Invisible Zoology", as in, the study of animals that are imaginary?

I gave myself a W this semester... is it really looked down upon? what if its not a class required for med school or even for my major? such as an advanced E&M physics class to see if i'd be interested in the physics minor? (which turns out, adv. E&M is not so fun)

I withdrew from physics and lab (the only WP I ever had)-not a word about it during any of my interviews...if you make a habit out of withdrawing from classes, the schools may give some consideration to that...with an otherwise strong academic record, a W or two shouldn't really hurt...

I've never had to drop a class either, but really I was thrown under the bus on this one. The teacher I signed up for became ill before the start of the semester, and so I ended up in the class of a new guy who is bent on making the lives of all his students miserable. So I'll probably just drop the lab, and take it again maybe next year around this time. Students have been dropping this class left and right, and really I'm suprised that the department head hasn't at least sat in on a class, or at least talked to the guy.
