Congrats on your options. What kind of person and student are you? Do you like a more laidback approach? More competition? Familial support? Higher or lower COL? Weather preferences? Ask yourself these questions and make a pros and cons list, but there are my thoughts since these schools were in my top three.
- UCLA is more laidback than Michigan, which was more my speed, but I got the impression that UCLA’s admin was unorganized compared to Michigan.
- Michigan is known for being very friendliness and supportive, but they curve and cap clinical grades, which leads to competition on the wards (source: current med students). Also, Michigan students seemed more stressed with the 1 year preclinical compared to UCLA students, but you also have to consider that UCLA’s curriculum is fairly new and has a lot of bugs to work out.
- UCLA has P/F for clinical clerkships due to COVID and is considering keeping it P/F.
- UCLA has a higher COL compared to Michigan. Also, UCLA only guarantees their housing for 3 years, which means you will need to look for LA housing for at least 1 year, which can be a nightmare from what I heard. You will need a car at both places, but gas prices are through the roof in LA.
Both have amazing clinical training—you can’t go wrong! Just follow your gut.
