So, I know I'm probably starting a fire here, but does anyone get why in the MCAT discussion so many people are like, "hey man.. you're an underrepresented minority and scored a 21 on the MCAT... you'll have no problem getting in" I feel like that kind of sucks. It's like, I want minorities to be represented, but why is it okay for them to get lower scores? I really have nothing against there being an equal number of different ethnicities in graduate programs, but does this mean that because I'm a white female, I have to do better on the MCAT just to practice medicine... how does that qualify anyone as a good physician. This topic really fires me up.... will someone help me out and put me at ease 🙂

Well said! 😎

Please do not fall on the bandwagon of useless discussions this topic often brings about. Thanks.

oops.. sorry guys.. I really didn't mean to sound ABSOLUTELY ******ED.. i swear... I'm really really sorry if I offended anyone. I guess my questions was why are the numbers lower? It's an honest question and I just wish there was a way to increase diversity without numbers... dude i'm all for increased diversity, I promise you.. I"m just having issues with the discussion in the MCAT where people were like.. "dude you're totally in... but i'm definitely not." So I'm really sorry if I offended anyone.. my bad. 🙁

by numbers.. i meant, I kind of wish they'd chuck the MCAT for something different.. that's all 🙂

If you really want to be angry then why dont you focus your energy towards the other minorities such as ASIAN and INDIANS who barely make up 10% of America's population but currently take up half of all medical school seats.

What does that have to do with anything? Asians are not getting any bonuses or what not. Yes we should all be mad at them for working hard in and out of the class room grrrrrr.

Therefore, quite frankly premed if you dont like how this great country works then why dont you just LEAVE!

You don't have room to talk. Your first thread on SDN was about how GPA and MCAT scores should not be used and how the system should be redone.

In the end we're all responsible for our own actions. If you really want to get into school, it'll happen because of you, not because some extra seats would be open if, for example, there was no affirmative action. Take control of what you do in life!

Hey Premed,

Dont get your panties in a bunch... its not the urms who are taking your medical school seats. We barely make up 6% of the applicant people. If you really want to be angry then why dont you focus your energy towards the other minorities such as ASIAN and INDIANS who barely make up 10% of America's population but currently take up half of all medical school seats.

Allenn,
I don't think you get Premeds point. What she means is that she doesn't think it is fair for someone with certain stats to have an advantage over someone else with similar stats solely based on the color of his/her skin. It is true that Medical Schools actively recruit URMs and in doing so they lower the criteria for admissions. By the way, Asians and Indians are minorities, however we are not considered URMs, therefore our competition is fierce. Knowing that we must excel drives us to work even harder...that's why we are so successful in obtaining seats in med school.
