URM's at interivews??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
On many occasions I am the only URM at the interview. I stopped disclosing what day I was interviewing at a particular school for just that reason. It would be too easily identified. I have been to 9 interviews and at two interviews there was another URM there. Really saddens me.

Everyone. And they all had sub 3.0 and 25 on the MCAT

none at my first interview (out of 5)
none at my second interview (out of ~8)
none at my third interview (out of ~12)
one at my fourth interview (out of ~10)

I have yet to go on an interview without at least 2 minority candidates present.

Yeah, I was the only one at many of my interviews. The Texas interviews usually had a few URMs, but my OOS interviews were very racially homogenous. This is another reason why the whole AA debate seems a bit silly to me. If so many URMs are taking spots in medical schools, why aren't they at the interviews?

Most of mine had at least one or two. Some were hispanic, they may pass you as being "white."

My point exactly.

Jeez being sarcastic is so efficient 😀

For some people school rank is important, or match lists or location. This is obviously important to the OP.

Is that why I was getting eye-balled at my interview by Non_URMs!!

Naw just kidding - everyone was polite and courteous. We were all just focused on getting through the interviews and doing our best rather than all the BS. - at least thats how it seemed.

I just want to know what the interview environment is like… I asked a fellow URM friend who was interviewing and, he also said that he was usually the only URM. Thus, I wanted to confirm it here on SDN…

Hence the question "why is it important?". Just curious is all

Sorry, I read it to mean 'you should not think it is important'.

To the OP:
Of all the interviews I have had the current students have been a different spread compared to the applicants. So I think maybe what you should be after is 'how many URMs are currently at the schools you interviewed'

You know, I don't remember. I guess I wasn't keeping track. I honestly couldn't tell you, and besides, it's not like URM's have "URM" stamped across their forehead.

One thing I did notice though, was that I definitely felt like the minority sex-wise. There was a majority of women at both.

Indeed..something to think about

Not true. At one of mine they did. Plus some girls came in with a red 'A' on their chests, weird.

Its pretty much like most people have already said. 1 or 2 URMs amongst 8+ Non-URMs. I personally don't notice who's what until after the interviews - cos then I have the luxury to indulge otherwise I'm pretty much just focusing on doing well on the interview. A good thing to do is talk a little to everyone to exercise your mouth before your interview especially if its in the morning. I found that helps me get comfortable with the new environment. Doesn't have to be an out right conversation, just an ice-breaker. Helps with smiling too. Its easy to have a dull look on your face in the morning without even knowing it.

Good luck

 I didn't know Hester Prynne was applying to med school. Ugh, that book was miserable.

True. You can't tell whom might be a URM. For example, the Latino population. Not only are there a broad range of tans in each Latin country (from white, Spaniard, to dark, indian pop.), but there are also people that are half Latino and half caucasian (and are considered URM). You really cannot tell. Ive been to a couple of interviews where ppl that I thought were not URM ended up being URM, they usually end up being half when I talk to them (or not)... Just something else to consider...you cannot really make a valid guess as to how many URMs there might be at your interview date (or future medical school class). Also there are some people that come from south asia, middle east, etc. that some might think are Latino and vice versa...you really cannot base it on looks.

Also, I know ppl joke, but many URMs have stats way above the average applicant...

And why would that be?

Well…
A)What are the chances of having a black female from your college at an interview?
B)If you list the date of the interview it makes it pretty obvious..
C)I guess if your avatar is not your real picture it might confuse a person or two…

That was a good one...that was a good book

All of my interviews had at least one URM, my Cornell interview having the most. Most of the URMs I met were from Harvard. Maybe it depends on where you go to interview.

It must be pretty weird to have people recognize you off of SDN...

Like others have said, it's often difficult to tell who is URM, especially with those of Latino heritage, but I usually manage to figure it out when they shuttle us off to a special diversity reception. I went to an MSTP interview yesterday where I was the only woman and the only brown girl (though I don't know if any of the guys qualified as URM). I really wanted to make a joke about it, like put AA on my nametag over my name, but most people don't appreciate my inappropriate sense of humor, so I bit my tongue.

I'm constantly being recognized my SDNers. I don't care, or I wouldn't list my interview dates. I don't post anything I'm ashamed of, so whatever.

Joking or not, it's still a touchy subject for most URMs (such as myself) so I think temmie's entitled to feeling a bit offended.

hence the term UNDER represented. if everyone at your interview was black/latino/whatever, you'd kind of doubt the UNDER representation, no?

Thanks for the insight annavas! I really learned a lot

Ha, I think you're funny. 🙂 What do they talk about during the diversity receptions?

This one doctor told me it would be easy for me to get in because almost no women apply to med school. I was like, what year are you living in sir?

I'm glad someone appreciates my tasteless humor.

The diversity things usually consist of a small group of black and Latino students trying to convince us that they're comfortable at the school, despite being low in number. At one school, which I liked in spite of my annoyance with their gung-ho diversity crap, they put me in a room with the only other URM girl, had us go out to a special lunch with URM students (all 5 of them, ha ha), and then made us meet with a dean from the multicultural center. It was the first visit where I felt like the school was hyper aware of my race, despite the fact that I never expressed any concern over the environment there. It was a little suspect (makes you wonder why they have to recruit so hard), but I just took it as a well-meaning gesture, and played along.

Hmm, that's interesting. Does anyone know if there are any medical schools or DO schools that have a non-white majority?
