Hi...I'm a new poster...I was wondering what the requirements would be for a US grad who has taken steps I and IIcs/ck would have to do General Practice abroad in Italy for a year. Would step III need to be taken first? I heard you just need a degree to practice gp over there but I was unsure...

thanks

If you want to go into private practice and not have any admitting privileges, then I think all you need to do is to take the board exam and be admitted to the "albo". The board exam now consists of 3 months of clinical work (1 in FP, 1 in surgery and 1 in internal medical) then the written test which is based on a bank of 5000 questions. You can download the latest questions http://esame.miur.it/.

I don't think you can legally practice in Italy without having passed the boards here but I could be wrong... you should contact the international health centers (eg. http://www.iht.it/aimc/) and ask them what they require of their foreign drs.

Italy couldn't care less about your USMLE status, because it's not accepted in Italy. EXCEPT that some countries require a certificate of good standing from your home licensing authority, which obviously requires that you hold a valid license. I don't know if that's the case in Italy.

However, you do need the certificate di abilitazione all’esercizio della medicina e chirurgia, or a certificate of equivalency, which requires the steps mentioned by previous poster. You'd also need to hold a permanent residency and work permit - which is increasingly hard to get.
