Just a little bit of advice. When you apply to medical school, you have to do something called an interview. At this interview, you should try to show the interviewer that you have tact and know how to communicate with the patients effectively and with compassion. They also want to know that you will be able to work in a good environment with your other students in your class. And it prolly wouldn't be smart to piss off the people who are actually at the school you are applying to early decision. Just a hint.

I received the USC secondary last night and I'm not EDP. They asked for cover sheets with your recs. Kind of weird.

They ask for cover sheets to speed the processing. I guess big letters = faster processing. I think they are necessary if you are requesting individual letters coming from different places, so they are easier to keep track of.

I plan to apply to USC next year as an out-of-state applicant, so I know it's a long shot. Does anyone know:
1.) What GPA/MCAT would a non-resident need to be competitive at USC?
2.) Does having connections to the state/area make any difference for a non-resident applicant? I am from socal originally (lived there until I was 14) and have a lot of family in the area still.
Thanks!

Mistress S,

USC is a private institution, meaning that it doesn't care whether you are a resident or not. I don't think it's a long shot for non-residents to get in; residents and non-residents probably have equal chances (because they don't really get public funds, they can't discriminate that way anyway).

The reason that Keck is populated by California residents is because a lot of students would rather stay in California than move somewhere else, hence a greater percentage of California pre-meds apply to USC, which results in a greater percentage of the class being from California. But don't let the numbers scare you into thinking you have no shot.

If you are looking to apply to UCLA, UCSD, or UCSF, though, that is a different matter. I am a non-resident, and have not heard a peep out of these schools. 🙁

what dara said Mistress S.

the averages for USC is 3.6 GPA and a 32 MCAT.

do any of you know if there's a link to the keck school brochure... keep looking thru their website to read about the different programs they offer to med students and really can't find much...anyone know?
thanx

Thanks guys...I know USC is private, I guess I just figured with so few out-of-state residents going there that they must have higher standards for them, like the UC's. That could just be a function of the high number of in-state applicants though, and the fact that they are more likely to matriculate there. That's good to know that they don't base decisions on residency, my GPA is above their avg. (3.75) although I am going to take the Aug MCAT so I'll have to see how I do on that. I would love to go to USC, it ain't cheap but you can't beat the weather or the location (I think LA would be a great place to learn medicine, and the beach is like 20 minutes away! *sigh*). Good luck to all of you applying this year!

thanks jalby for the website.
that's the one i originally looked thru, but couldn't find too much.

are you a student there?
if so, do you think you could give me some of the more important highlights of the school (i.e. community service programs, etc) ...and, what kind of students do you think they look for?

any info would be great. thanks very much for your help.

Do a search of my old posts and you can find a ton of stuff.

thanx for your tip Jalby 🙂

keep ur hopes high. hopefully we will all be classmates

I'm applying too. 3.7 GPA. 13VR, 10PS, 10BS. Kinda annoyed about the Bio, but it was the orgo part that killed me; my prof sucked, and so I really didn't end up learning anything in that class.

Gonna be submitting my AMCAS by the end of the week. About how long does it take to get the secondary?

I had a question about how they handle your letter of recs. I know they want two letters from science profs, and any extras are strictly optional. Do you think it would be best to separately send the "mandatory" and "optional" letters so that they know exactly which ones you want to count as extra/mandatory?

Send your letters together. Likelihood is they'll figure out which meet the required option when they see Professor Yournamehere, PhD and their science department on their letter.

Good luck with apps.
