Hi all you USC lovers!

Personally, I loved the school, and am rushing home everyday looking for the big envelope that other SDN posters have been talking about. I have also been scanning all the posts to see when people hear from them. I thought if there were just one place where people could discuss Keck, it would make it easier on me, and others like me.

As for me:

Interview (date): 2/4/03

Accept/Reject/waitlist (date): Have not heard

What did I like: The hospital was great! I was also very impressed by the attitude of the student, and their motivation.
Lastly, liked the idea of the new curriculum and am glad that it has had a couple years to work out the kinks.

Interview (date): 12/17/02

Accept/Reject/waitlist (date): Accepted 1/18/03

What did I like:
I really felt med students gain great clinical experience from the school. The students were all really freindly and they seemed relaxed.
I am still unsure if I would like to take so much out in loans to attend Keck though. 😕

CCHeib,

I also interviewed 2/4. Who are you? My name is Michelle.

Interviewed: 2/4
Accepted: 2/20
What I liked: I was very impressed with the school, the students seemed very happy, County is a bit scary but you have to go where the action is!

Someone convince my brother (Dr. Dodger Dog) to join me at Keck. They accepted him right away and gave him a full scholarship. But he's putting it behind his acceptances to Hopkins and UCSF. BAH! USC is awesome. USC free is THE ****.

Michelle..... I saw six cases of tuberculosis (one milliary) at County in my first semester there. I was interviewing patients on my own by the first week of September of my first year. I shadowed in the ER and got to assist a resident in placing a chest tube on a stab victim. Once again, my first semester of my first year. Don't let County scare you...... it is an amazing place.

Being from San Francisco, I have to give the home school some prop's...but depending on how cool your bro is 🙂 , I think he is right about the free greatness of USC.

Hard decision, I wish I had to make it!! Good luck, and i am sure any choice would be a good one.

Hey Michelle, my name is Christy. I was one of the few at the interview that did not have a black suit and white shirt on (blue suit/v. colorful shirt)....have you heard anything yet?

Ok...I promise this will be my last in line post!😉

Sorry about the double post to Michelle (mfleur)...liberal arts college made me into a skim reader!

And, what kind of a thread starter am I? I forgot the most important part....
CONGRAT'S DZM, mfleur, and Dr. Dodger Dog!!! Hopefully I'll be able to join your club.

AznTrojan-MS & SCIronMike...assuming you are Kecker's, you'll keep us posted on the inside track, right??😛

Eh. I have no use for hot girls since the ball started rolling on this whole "MARRIAGE" thing. I suppose eye candy is good, but the playa role will have to be all yours now Stan. Anyways, bros over hoes right? 😀 Kidding, kidding, kidding 😳

I got a really good vibe from USC when I visited...the students were chill, the lecture I sat in on was interesting (not falling asleep is a huge accomplishment for me!), I liked the MDLs, etc etc.

i agree i was a bit scared by county but mfleur was right when she said you gotta go where the action is! It's better to see it earlier i think!

Was anyone from SDN there on 11/5?

Also, there was a younger brother of a keck student interviewing in my group...was it you Dr. Dodger dog?

Hey AznTrojan and Iorn Mike...thanks for the offers. I guess I'll dive right in.

1) How often does the admit committee meet?
2) Do you know any specifics on how important the interview is in comparison to the rest of your application?

The reason I ask question #2 is because I felt that my interview went really well...but my interviewer said in some what of a joking manner that he often gives good eval's and rarely gives bad ones. If he always gives good marks, will they take his good evaluation of me less seriously?

Weird question I know, but any help would be well observed.

Of all the schools I've been to, I thought the clinical experience at Keck was the best, hands-down. Loved County, loved the weather, loved the school, lunch was great, and I even loved the anatomy lab. Hated LA. But my sister's out there, and I could learn to deal. Interviewed beginning of December, still haven't heard (was rebuffed rather abruptly at both my endeavors to find out my status). I, too, stalk the mailman for any news. Ah, well. Such is life...

Good to know, i guess that means i shouldn't call...I really am itching to know!!!

Hey CC -- This is the email they sent me 15 days after I emailed them: "It is a committee decision and unfortunately we are unable to give you a status check regarding the review process. Thank you." What the woman said to me on the phone was even less informative, if you can imagine, and not quite so nice. Thusly (is that a word?), I have moved on to stalking the mailman.

😡 LA is THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!! Are you basing this hatred on seeing just the surrounding 15 mile radius from the hospital or actually seeing ALL of Los Angeles and visiting the nice spots. NOT the touristy spots, but the NICE spots. If you hate Los Angeles, you should avoid USC med. It's hard to understand and relate to the community that you serve when you dislike the community.

I wish I knew the answer to these questions..... maybe Stan does. Sorry.

don't know the answer to the 1st question..

the interview is basically used to gauge if the applicant is psycho or not.. however.. if you get along well with your interviewer.. it's usually a good sign..

sorry for the vague answer

Thanks guys...I guess I will just have to learn the art of patience.

i interviewed in late january ( forgot exact date) and was accepted mid feb.- boy was i lucky!
i loved loved loved the school, but i am worried about the cost.

Congrats kiping!
I think that everyone is concerned about the cost, not only the school, but the living...but it is worth it, at least thats what everyone says. I guess i should wait until i am actually accepted to worry, but i am waiting on multiple LA schools, so let the worrying begin. Hopefully i can be as lucky as you...please oh please!!! Again, back to attacking the mail man.

CCHiebs

I'm in the same boat: loved USC (not South Carolina), interviewed in December, no word. The hardest thing about it is the underwhelming lack of info.

What can we do? Anybody know anything?

Shamthis

Who knows??? But i will tell you this: at the recommendation of my interviewer, i did write a letter to the dean, indicating how and why USC was a good fit for me. Obviously, this hasn't had any immediate success, but I haven't gotten rejected yet, so that's a plus. I can't say that my letter was amazing, or even great for that matter...I guess the best part of it was that i was sincerly telling him that USC and me are a perfect fit. Wow this is begining to sound like a love story, just sub in "man of my dreams" for USC, and it's perfect.

"That is all I have to say about that"

Ummm, it's a her. And you really should write a really detailed letter. I helped Hero write a letter last year, and he got in with the very first batch of students.

I addressed my letter to Stephen Ryan, the dean of USC SOM. Perhaps this was the wrong person to address the letter to, but i'm pretty sure that she is a he...Anyhow, that is who the interviewer told me to write to.

Perhaps you think I should write to Erin Quinn, the associate dean of admission? Let me know, and I will write her as well.

Thanks for the input.

Yeah, Dr. Quinn is the person you should be writing the letter to. She is one of the nicest people I have ever met by the way. If you are on the waitlist and get in, she personally calls each and every one of the people and is actively involved with us as med students, too.

Hey Jalby,

How much Spanish do you have to know to get by at County? I took a couple of years in high school but I barely remember any. I was just wondering if I should study a little this summer to prepare.

Damn! I was hoping you would say "No don't worry about it--there are more translators than there are doctors"

Oh well, I guess I better break out the Dos Mundos book from high school

I got an evite they sent out for "New Student Reception," which congrtulated me for my acceptance. I haven't gotten any notice of acceptance yet, so I called the admissions office to make sure it wasn't a cruel joke. I'm still waiting for that letter, but I'm pretty sure I'm in. I interviewed on 2/25, so the turnaround was extremely fast!

Well, congratulations then! You going to the reception?

I don't _suppose_ they would consider subsidizing plane tickets this time around...?

Flying to LA again from east coast do cost some $.

Congrat's T-bruin! Are you going to go? Seeing as you are a UCLA undergrad, it's pretty close to the old stomping ground...

The big question is, now will you start cheering for the Trojans??

Does anyone know if Keck waits until the end of April to send out their rejections post-interview? I have heard of people being sent a decision of wait list, but not rejected.

Any insight into this process would help since they are not willing to say anything about your status except that you should hear by the end of April. Thank You.

lol. I doubt you will get anything unless you are like in the top 10 recruits, but don't hold your breath.

As for rejection letters, we hardly reject anybody, but you would get them about in June post interview.

As for routing for USC, I came from UCLA and loved going to USC football games. A great experience, which I shall do next year, too.

K, Back to class. Hope to see ya'll in a month or so.

Thanks! I will be going to the reception. The campus is only 30 minutes away from UCLA. I think I'll be a loyal bruin even though 'SC kicked ass this year.

I actually voted for both throughout the season, but I was glad to be sitting in the right section for the big game.
