Condensed
So quite a few people IMed me asking if I had USC?s match list, so I went down to the office and got a copy. It was actually better than I thought. So here is the match list (condensed) for the class of 2002.
First, the best residencies, because that is all pre-meds care about (and most med students)
Derm (1)
USC
Ophthalmology (5)
Baylor
Univ of Rochester
USC
UT Southwestern
UCLA
Otolaryngology (7)
Duke
U Mich
Harvard
UCSD
UT Houston
UC Davis
USC
Ortho (6)
Albany
USC
McGill
Det/Wayne
Marico (in phoenix)
UCLA
Now for the rest. I didn?t want to type in all the other residencies, so what I did was I counted the number of people who didn?t match in California and who aren?t at a top 25 school for residency (i.e. Non-Cali, non-top 25 residencies) Here is the list of where those people went. You can prolly guess some of the residency programs.
Denver
Albany
Washington DC
Louisville
Rochester
Salt Lake City
Bronx
Las Vegas
Tuscon
Houston (UT Houston)
Quebec
Philly
Dayton Ohio
Detriot
Phoenix
Philly
Portland
Seattle (not U Wash)
Phoenix
Denver
Tuscon
New Hyde Park, NY
Wash DC
Tuscon
And realize that includes some of the hard residencies mentioned above. So 22 people out of 162 didn?t end up in cali and didn?t end up at a top 25 school (Pretty good. Bottom 12.5%) I?m guessing a lot of those people came from these locations (See the arizonas and Salt Lake City) and prolly wanted to go home for residency.
Now, from this point on it is pure recruiting, so don?t read if you don?t want to. It?s basically an essay on why to choose USC.
This match list was taken from the class that was accepted in 1998. In ~1999, Keck gave a 110$ million donation to USC, and told USC to use the money to become a great school. So USC now has a goal of becoming a top 10 school in 10 (now 9 I think) years. I think that is unrealistic, but maybe a top 20. TO accomplish this they have built 3 new research buildings and 3 more are in process of being built with about 2-3 more being planned.
They also redesigned the curriculum so that we teach an integrated curriculum instead of the type where you get taught normal systems first year (which isn?t really on the boards) then abnormal second year (which is HEAVILY tested on the boards). We are now taught each system, normal and normal at once. I have completed 22 weeks of school, and I now know all of microbio, what drugs to use for it, immunology, and now just starting heme. While other students are still learning stuff you don?t have to learn again, I?m getting stuff that I will need for the boards and once I am practicing. We are the second class to get this curriculum and I am sure that our average board scores will go up because of this, where as the match list above had the old curriculum.
USC, has also decided to recruit the best students academically to our school (Wasn?t true in the past). So last years class had the highest GPA and MCAT in the history of SC, and my class now holds that distinction with a 3.64 GPA and a 32.4 Average MCAT. I?m sure next years class will prolly top us.
So how has this drive to become a better school (at least as far as USNews is concerned) going?? When I first applied three years ago, SC was about 47 in the nation. Last year, they were 43. This year, 36. With better scores from my class, I would guess we will be about 33 this upcoming year.
Hope this is helpful to some of you guys and if you have any questions, feel free to PM me. Not gaurunteeing I?ll have time to reply, though.
