How Do I Incorporate USMLE Audio Files into my Busy Schedule?

I recommend you do what I did as a medical student - which is to fill your mental "down time" with USMLE Audio. That is to say, be sure to listen to your USMLE Audio Reviews when:

• Commuting (for some this in an extra hour or two of study time per day)
• Mowing the yard (an hour or two a week)
• Walking the dog (this was an extra 7 hours a week of study time for me)
• At the gym (another extra 5-7 hours of study time per week)
• Traveling home to see the folks (an extra 4 to 10 hours of study time per trip)
• If you can't sleep - pop on your iPod and study a little while you drift off (note you can't learn while actually sleeping - it doesn't work - I tried it)
• If you are an extremist like me - at the beach and while snow-skiing (I've done it)

In addition, when it comes crunch time approaches an you are really cramming for the USMLE

• Set aside some study time each day to sit in a quiet place
• Pop on your USMLE MP3 Reviews for Step 2
• Listen intensively as you go through all the material
• Take notes on hard to remember or understand points as you go
• Go through the audio multiple times

Tips on Using The USMLE Step 2 Review Audio Courses

1. Calculate the total number hours of the program
2. Make a schedule to cover the program the desired number of times in that time frame
3. Stick to your schedule - do not deviate
4. Some recommend deleting files from your library once you have learned them.

I only have anecdotal data from my own experience with USMLE audio reviews and from students. I used Gold Standard USMLE audio, and loved it. I found it very helpful for my basic science courses, clinical rotations and USMLE Step 1 and 2.

Other students have used the program and found them useful too.

I recommend our Total Audio Package to fill up all of that mental down-time that can just get wasted during the course of a week. As a resident in NYC, I had to walk my two Jack Russell Terriers twice daily. To prevent the time from just being "wasted," I would pop on my iPod and listen audio reviews. I even studied with headphones on while painting the house or mowing the yard, as a student and did the same thing with my commute to/from the hospital. And now, as a practicing physician, I do the same on the treadmill at the gym (CME while you exercise).

So the Step 2 Total Audio package is a great way to turn "wasted" time into productive time. I'm an MD and these and other audio reviews helped me all along the way.

I've really enjoyed using the Gold Standard Package to supplement my learning...and the accessibility is what makes this tool invaluable. I actually transcribed a little of the audio a few years back and have still used the audio in my truck almost everyday...it truly is worth it!

That being said, how would someone implement this into their residency Step 3 years?
I've downloaded a FREE sample of the Step 3 CCS audio and find it very helpful, but still feel I could use more of a Step 2 - type background going into my intern year. Any suggestions as to when to let go of the Step 2 material and integrate the Step 3 material? Thanks.

Basically, for the USMLE Step 3 CCS, we really have only the USMLE Help Step 3 CCS Audio Here. The cases in this audio program basically teach you how to think about going though cases for the Step 3 CCS.

You are correct that Step 3 is basically an "integration" of USMLE Step 2 material into a clinical case-based simulation setting, so you need USMLE Step 2 review material (meaning that you need to review stuff from all the major specialties). In short, I would recommend the USMLE Step 2 Total Audio Package Here.

Alternatively, you could purchase an audio board review for Residents - the MKSAP 16 Internal Medicine Board Review MP3 Here (if you are doing IM for internship) or the Osler General Surgery Board Review MP3 (if you are doing GS for internship).

As you move on to be a resident - you will do best to pick either an Osler or a CMEInfo board review in your specialty.
