When it comes to USMLE Audio Reviews for the USMLE Step 3, "the pickin's are a little slim." Why is this? In general, as medical residents are studying for the USMLE Step 3, they are using less material than they did for previous USMLE Step exams. In fact, many residents report only reviewing a single book for the USMLE Step 3. Compare that the all the texts, and notes, and audios that most students study for the USMLE Step 1, and you'll see my point! With that said, there is at least on case-based review for the USMLE Step 3.

Is there a recommended companion text for these lectures?

Regarding USMLE Help Audio

All of the USMLE Help Audio Programs are unabridged, word-for-word audiobook versions of the printed texts - so you can use the printed texts. Links can be found on the Apollo individual program pages for their Audio Listings Here.

Regarding Gold Standard Audio

For the Gold Standard Step 1 Audio there is a reference manual in .pdf included that you can use.
For the Gold Standard Step 2 and Foundations programs - there is currently no written material.

I recommend you do what I did when I was a medical student:
  • Use the audio along with your rotations/classes
  • Listen at times when you cannot just "sit" with a book - like at the gym or walking the dog.
  • Go through the audio more than once to improve retention

Are you working on written material?

Yes. Currently we are working on transcriptions of all of the Gold Standard USMLE Audio reviews to create both a working transcript for future updates, and a reference text that students can use along with the audio. You can learn more and become a transcriber at this thread:

Would you say that these mp3s are more geared towards the CCS portion of the Step 3 where you have to think quickly about the next steps or would it also be useful for the mcq portion of the exam?

Also what is the split of topics i.e. how much of the mp3s are dedicated to IM vs pediatrics/surgery/psych/ambulatory/ob/gyn? For a person in an IM residency would the mp3s be sufficient for preparing for the other specialties in this exam?

The Step 3 CCS book IS NOT a comprehensive review of all the medial material for the USMLE Step 3. The truth is that the material for the USMLE Step 2 CK and Step 3 is very similar - thus I would recommend Apollo's USMLE Step 2 Total Audio Package to cover the clinical material - which includes "Foundations of Internal Medicine" to wrap your head around the clinical knowledge you need to know for the USMLE Step 3.

The USMLEHelp Step 3 CCS Audio MP3 is indeed about your "thought process." Moving from the history to vitals to exam to differential to testing to diagnosis. That is what all the clinical cases are about.

Thanks,

Got it! Thanks for the clarification! I've been trying out the CCS cases from the USMLE website and I find myself forgetting important orders that nurses usually put in (like oxygen, iv fluids, diet etc) even though I know the diagnosis. The mp3s sound like they may be useful to help me overcome that. However, assuming I still have difficulty remembering to put those orders in, how will that affect my performance if I am competent at remembering the life-saving orders (like chest tube, beta blockers etc)?

Neuro or Derm - take a look at these SDN posts about the CCS orders and how they will affect your grades.
