Gotta be honest here. Given the extraordinarily unique circumstances of your situation, I think the only thing you can do is just apply and find out for yourself what the application process is going to entail. Second-hand stories, rumors and other uncertainties such as word-of-mouth and "I heard such and such" ultimately isn't going to do you any good, so just jump in with both feet and go for it.
