hi guys, i guess i should have asked this earlier when i posted about galv, houst, and sa, but does anyone out there go to southwestern. can you give us your thoughts on the important aspects we might like to know. i dont know anyone there, but people who know others there have not given me the ravest reviews. ive heard its very difficult to get any help in anatomy labs, the teaching is not always that great, and it is not a very social place/student body. anyone care to comment? thanks.

I'd definitely apply there for med school. I had a friend that went there for med school; he was an out-of-stater, but apparently they gave him in-state plus a 3 thousand dollar scholarship to further entice him to go there. I don't know if that's standard policy, but in-state tuition there is dirt cheap for the quality of school that it is. Make your decision of where to go to med school after getting your financial aid packages.

in TX you get your financial aid crap late since theoretically you are only matched in to one school and that's where you are going. I didn't get mine till June.

do a user search for cabruen. he is a MS1 there and has offered to answer any questions in the past.

a lot of my high school/college basketball friends go there now. Im pretty much the lone idiot who couldn't make it. They all love it there. They tell me its pretty competitive though.

I think they post your grades next to your name so everyone can see how everyone is doing.

i couldnt find any info in that search. anyone else?

you should send him a pm is what I said and he will be glad to answer any of your questions. I recommend him because he writes clearly and is very complete.

Here is a thread he posted in (like the 3rd post of something.) Hit the pm button under his post and send him a question. He does all kinds of crazy work in the jungles and stuff so he may be able to answer your question about underserved areas.

HA...LOL
They do NOT post your grades next to your names. In fact, I think they are a little overly careful about grade confidentiality.
There are a lot of rumors about UTSW...99.9% of which are not true.

A compliment from seaworthc is an honor indeed. :)

I can not compare to other medical schools obviously, but I can not imagine ever going without help in the Anatomy lab. The professors and TAs are constantly circulating and are extremely knowledgable to helpful. I imagine this is the way it is at most schools however. Every year, the anatomy course is the most popular freshman course. I concur. Dr. Finn is a brilliant OMF Surgeon that teaches a large part of he course, and one of our professors is an ex-B movie actor/porno star turned PhD in Cell Biology that all he women fawn over.

I have been singularly impressed by the lecturers so far. Of the 20 or lecturers that we have had to this point, most of them have been spectacular. There are one or two that stand out as complete turkeys, but I personally am very fond of styles of most of them.

Not that 2 months in medical scool makes me an expert, but what is hard to appreciate from where you are sitting now, is to realize that most medical school learning is a fairly solitary effort. No amount of lecturing or lab work replaces the hours that you will spend in the library or at home or at a coffee shop reading and digesting material for yourself. This is what comprises the reality of medical school edication during the first couple of years.

Best of luck. Email if you have any further questions.

seaworthc -- I miss you terribly babe. I hope they are treating you well down there. ;)
