Hey folks-
I'll be M1 in the fall and I have to decide TODAY between these two schools. I've been through the pros and cons 1000 times. The one thing I've never had a good answer about is how big the difference will be matching from these two schools. I know UVA is ranked, matches better, etc. but I have a few compelling reasons for choosing EVMS. If you have first hand knowledge, ideas, or comments from the peanut gallery I'd love to hear them. Thanks in advance!

Go where the tuition is the cheapest, and where you want to live for four years.

I'm from Virginia (went to James Madison University undergrad), and think living in CHarlottesville for four years would be fun... I don't like the Norfolk/VA Beach area...

Thanks for the input! I'd probably be fired up about living in C'ville if I hadn't already spent 10 years of my life there. Funny, I did a bunch of post-bacc classes at JMU (have a house just outside of Harrisonburg). Any other ideas? Help!

I wouldn't worry about residency placement. Sure, UVA is a "bigger name" school, but I don't think it would make THAT big of a difference in applying to residency. I would go where I would want to live for atleast 2, maybe 3-4 years (not sure where else you can do rotations for your third year, some schools have lots of different hospitals). If you've lived in CHarlottesville for 10 years, and WANT a change of scenery, then go to EVMS...

But isn't EVMS a private school? I can't rmemeber. If tuition is no problem (i.e. mom and dad bank), then who cares, but if you are footing the bill in the end, go where its cheapest.

Actually EVMS is cheaper by a bit, and I did decide to head to Norfolk (although not for financial reasons). Thanks for your help Quinn! (BTW, are you related to that Eskimo?)

I have personally worked with medical students from EVMS and have been impressed with many of them as a whole. I have even met with Physician Asst students who do quite well. Driving around Hampton Roads is not fun but pales in comparison to the gridlock in much larger cities. However, there is a lot to do in your free time here which could make for a lot of distractions.
