Hi!
I'm interviewing at UVA in a few weeks. If anyone is a UVA student who is from out of state, what kind of odds do I have at this school? My numbers are a little over the averages, and I have family in the area, which I alluded to in my secondary. I'd really like to come there, it's my second choice school right now even though I'm from all the way over in the midwest, but I've got a pretty late interview. I don't wanna get my hopes up, but then again, I kinda do! Any advice??
Also, I'm flying in a day early on a weekend, so any advice on what I can do on a Saturday nite/Sunday would be appreciated.
Thanks people!

Hey Siempre. I am in-state, but I hope my advice can help you. Dr. Bailey told us during the interview day that about 50% of those interviewed will be offered an acceptance, so your odds are already high 🙂 It will also help that you have ties to Virginia. I am sure you will love the city of Charlottesville. It's a great combination of suburban and country life. As for things to do on Saturday/Sunday, I suggest that you visit Monticello (Jefferson's home). They have really great tours. The downtown mall is also a historic place that is fun, and the taxi fare should be pretty cheap. Or you could just visit UVA and see what it's all about. Don't forget to see the lawn and the Rotunda  . Good luck and I hope you enjoy yourself.

Jessica's advice is great - once you have an interview your chances of being admitted are about the same in-state or out-of-state. My advice is to just to be ethusiastic during your interview and make sure to let your interviewers know the specific reasons you're interested in UVA, not just the general reasons on why you want to go to med school. I think if you're truly interested in a school that will shine through.

If you have any questions about the curriculum or interview or anything, I'd be more than happy to answer them... I interviewed last year but I doubt much has changed.

Good luck, siempre! And congrats Jessica on your acceptance!

Oh..for fun stuff on your visit, the downtown mall, walking around the corner (the area around 14th and Main sts, close to most hotels), and walking around the grounds themselves (right next to the corner) are fun. Stay with a student host if you can - it's a great way to meet some students.
