I am torn. I loved both of these programs when I interviewed, but now I don't know which one to choose. Reputation is not the #1 factor for me, but I plan on going into GI so I do need to be at a relatively reputable place. Any thoughts would be appreciated about either program, good, bad or ugly.

i can say with confidence that your best bet is vanderbilt. It is a FASTLY growing department, that's getting amazing interns every year, tons of research going on, and excellent faculty. And they take care of their residents. I'd love to go there, cept its in nashville...not as diverse a city as I'd like for a single guy such as myself.

Thanks for the reply. I kind of got the feeling that Vandy was going places (namely up) when I visited there. Lots of new construction and research dollars, but I wasn't able to go to the pre-interview dinner so I didn't get a good feel for the personality of the residents. I also liked the 2 hospital system and larger city patient population. I hit it off great with their PD, but the Chair seemed awful dry. Ohhh well. I will make my choice eventually. It is not a bad spot in life to have to choose between 2 great programs.

Pick Vanderbilt b/c I want UVA...just kidding

On my interview day everyone at UVa boasted about their GI division. I don't know how it compares to Vandy, but that might be something to consider if you're pretty sure you're headed towards GI. I get the impression that it's a pretty fantastic division.

Very happy at UVA. Didn't interview at Vandy but did at most of the traditional powerhouses (Duke, MGH, Brigham etc). By far UVA was my favorite and I ranked them #1. Tons of research opportunities, committed focus on education, humane (but rigorous) schedule, phenomenal people; both attendings and fellow residents to work with. Speaking from experience the GI division is outstanding here.

I'm sure you would do great at both places though. Go with your gut.

:luck:

tough call. I'm working through it myself in a way. I think Vandy will be higher on my list because Charlottesville is just really small. I think Nashville has more going on in terms of patient pop., and culture. I really loved UVA though - really quality place. Vanderbilt I only visited for 20 hours, and I was seriously preoccupied (taking step 2 two days later) - so I may have gotten a worse impression than what really exists. The program director was great, but I think the culture was more formal and the residents were not as friendly amongst themselves. I think the attitude is one where the intern works extremely hard and the 2nd and 3rd years give them no pity - We had to do it and we survived, so now its your turn. I think that promotes self confidence, but it might be a torturous year. Anyone else have any thoughts?

I loved both these places and I'm trying to figure out which one to rank above the other too. UVA as you know will have a new chair next year, so that's a big question mark, but Vandy's current chair is a little strange, to put it mildly. However I loved the PD's at both places. If patient diversity and hospital diversity matter to you, then Vandy might be a better bet, although the UVA residents kept saying that their patient pop was more diverse than they expected. I'm not sure how their GI departments compare, but I imagine you'd do great at either place, fellowship-wise. I thought Charlottesville was adorable, but I think Nashville might offer more for me, as a single woman with a fondness for music and culture. However, during my interview, one guy mentioned Bill Frist as a local philanthropist for various buildings, events, etc, and I couldn't help shuddering. I think Frist is such a tool, and it would seriously gross me out to have him as my senator. Not that this should factor into my choice of residency, LOL.

I felt similarly about good ole' video-neuro exam Frist- but it's my understanding that he will be retiring at the end of this term. Unfortunately it might be to run for president. Can you imagine that happening while being in his hometown?

Common sense and the state of Tennessee rank Vanderbilt higher. I'm sure UVA has a great program, but Vanderbilt has a national reputation.

I agree so much!!! Every time I heard Frist's name, I vomited in my mouth a little bit. Unfortunately you hear Frist's name quite a bit in that part of the world. The liberal in me (which is all of me) was really hoping for a more progressive atmosphere, and I think Charlottesville kind of fits that bill. That being said, I guess it is good that Frist is giving back to the community and the hospital, and I have lived all of my life in the south so a few more years of voting futility in a conservative bastion will not kill me.

I still haven't made up my freakin' mind about these two. It seems to be an impossible decision therefore I may have to flip a coin. I have assessed almost every possible permutation in my mind and they always come out equal.

Rhymes:
Vanderbilt : Peterbilt (Peter built a truck for a man to drive) (Old truckers never die they just get another Peterbilt)
UVA : Faye Ray (What ever happened to Faye Ray?) (Ohhhh Rocky!!!!)

AC/DC songs heard on way to interview:
Vanderbilt : For those about to rock we salute you
UVA: Dirty deeds done dirt cheap

Football Conference/Names
Vanderbilt : SEC Commodores
UVA : ACC Cavaliers

Time zone:
Vanderbilt : Central standard
UVA: Eastern standard

I will never decide. I think I am going to get my wife to randomly choose one and just go with it. The match is on my everlasting nerve!

"Go with your gut."

If you have any belly flab whatsoever, make a mouth from the skin creases, then lean down and listen. Does it moan "Go with Vandy" or "Go with UVA"? There's your answer.

Seriously though, if I hear another person say "Go with your gut," that person will get a bitchslap.

No kidding that is the most overused cliche in the match!!!

I can't go with my gut, I have irritable bowel. That would be a very bad decision.

No, no, no loophenle, when they say "go with your gut," what they really mean is - who feeds you the best? The last thing you want is a stale chicken burrito at 10 pm that you have to pay $6.50 for...with your own money!! This is especially important given the rather "delicate" nature of your bowels.

You could be objective about it and base your decision on the volume of your stool at the interviews.

Dang, If I just would have brought a potty hat!!! I wonder if I would be better of choosing the residency with the most stool or the least stool? I love talking about stool!!! I can't wait to be a GI doc!

Lets see, based on interview day:

Vanderbilt: Buffet with a whopping big piece of Key Lime pie 👍 👍

UVA: Salad, bread, veggies, salmon with oddly tasting peppermint cake 👍

Vanderbilt's lunch was better, but UVA's was better for me. Still I have to give the edge to Vanderbilt on this one. I didn't get to sample either joints cafeteria, but usually hospital food is hospital food.
