I loved both these programs and am having trouble ranking them. Assuming I don't want to practice either in the Pacific northwest or East Coast, what would you recommend?

JHU is slightly more prestigious(subjective) and may be better to get me back to my home state eventually, but it is in Baltimore which is a pretty terrible place to live.

UW is in seattle which is a way better city, but way more expensive. I didn't mesh with the residents as well at UW though. UW will still be able to get me back to my home state, but it doesn't quite have the Wow effect.

Thanks for any advice!

Do you want to go back to your home state? If so, it seems like an easy choice.
I feel like JH will probably open up the national market, but I hated Baltimore when I interviewed there for medical school. Could be wrong, but I'm not sure it's gotten a lot better.

Sounds like you are looking for reasons to rank UW over JHU. Just go with JHU.

Go to UW, Seattle is a significantly better place to live than Baltimore. If you're going to try to work in the region anyways, might as well enjoy where you live for 4 years.

How important is location to you? Baltimore isn't that terrible, if you are willing to go have fun in DC (1 hr drive away). I didn't mind living in Baltimore and enjoyed my time there due to having a strong social network. Overall, it appears if Baltimore was ideal, you would rank JHU over UW. For what it's worth, I know someone who ranked UW over Stanford.

If the goal was to go back to california for fellowship and ultimately practice, which would you guys recommend? JHU seems to open the national market more, but UW is on the west coast(though not in cali).

You guys been following this whole UW vs residents battle over pay happening over the media?

I'm sure other institutions share their attitude, but to openly go with the 'they should be happy they're at UW and stop asking for a raise' argument does not make me want to go there that much.

UW will have no problem filling any of its specialities. They know people will come. Everyone has to do residency and most people will suck up plenty to do it at a good place.

Last year, neurology did not fill. Two years ago, rad-onc did not fill. Prelim surgery never fills.

Prelim surgery not filling is a product of prelim surgery, not the institution. Very surprised to learn Rad-onc did not fill, that's hella competitive.

I would love for more things to not and for the administration to see an effect, but I'm doubtful.
