Hey guys, just wanted to start a thread for anyone who has already interviewed at the University of Washington SOM. Their first Executive Committee meeting is tomorrow (as per the interview calender), so hopefully we will here back from them next week and have some info. on our status then! :luck:

Also, anyone know about how many applicants they accept/reject right away? From what I have heard, many people get put in the "competitive pool" and don't know if they are accepted/waitlisted/rejected until April/May.

Excom meets Friday, and they will start notifying everyone on Monday...
From what I have heard in the past, At each meeting, they accept 10%, reject 10%, and the remaining people get to swim in the competitive pool until a future date (ie: they want to wait and see more applicants before they make final decisions on you)
I'm not sure how accurate the #'s really are, but I know that they place most of the applicants in the competitve pool. They go back periodically thru the cycle to review the applicants, but your stay there is undetermined..
for example, I didn't get out of the pool until April, and was placed in the unranked alternate list. My friend was in the pool until December, and got accepted.
They usually snail-mail acceptances and rejections, and e-mail competitive pool ppl...

good luck. :luck:

I languished in the competitive pool all year and was ultimately rejected. Most people are put in the competitive pool, but don't let it get to you. UW allegedly likes to makes its applicants sweat by rejecting them the first year and taking them the second. They see applying a second time as a real indicator for desire to become a doctor.

Thanks for the info! So, if I don't get an e-mail from them next week, I'll expect I was either accepted or rejected and will anxiously await the letter! :scared:

I was in the competitive pool last year and they do email if you are in that pool. However there is a status web page that tells you if they have made a decision on you after the excom meeting. Unfortunately it did not tell you what that decision was but that it was coming in the mail. You can call after getting that status change and they will tell you but make sure you are prepared for either outcome. I am assuming that it will be the same this year.

You'll be fine...
take it from a repeat offender... 😉
and yes, you can call and ask about your status. They are pretty nice about that too...
I would wait until it says "A decision has been made on your application" on the website: http://rainier.dom.washington.edu/admiss/uwapp.htmlx before making the call.
hope you hear good news on Monday. 🙂

Hey, just wondering if anyone who interviewed this month at the UWSOM has heard back yet about their status (since the first Excom meeting was supposedly on friday)? Or are you all still waiting like me? 🙁

For anyone who has applied in the past- is it too early to call them and ask? I know this is probably an annoying question, but the UW is my number one choice and I have been sitting on pins and needles here for the past few days! 😱

I feel your pain. I interviewed over a week ago and have been checking my email compulsively since Monday morning, dreading--but expecting--the "competitive pool" message. I have checked my status and all it says is "Application is complete." The Excom member in my interview said they wouldn't be able to look at all the applicants in the first Excom meeting last Friday. She told me I might have to wait at least a month to hear back from them... So you might be sitting on pins for a few more weeks until the committee meets for the second time.

I just got the "under consideration" email...more waiting for me. Is there a reason that it no longer mentions a competitive pool? I am hoping that there are not different pools of waiting and that I just got put in a lower pool. Anyone else receive a message?

I think it's all the same thing.... On interview day they said they were no longer calling it the pool. And yes, I also received the same message. Because one full year of waiting wasn't enough! At least this time I already have an acceptance under my belt, so I'm not as anxious. Okay, maybe I am. :scared:

Hi guys,

I have an interview at UWSOM soon and am searching for someone willing to do a mock med-school interview for hire. Must be in the general Seattle area. I am a post-baccalaureate student, and my post-bac program (on the east coast) did not offer mock interviews as part of their pre-med advising, so I'm looking to pay someone to provide this service for me. Anybody know of anyone, or have any suggestions? Any help very much appreciated.

Okay, I just got the e-mail too. 🙁 I was really dreading (but expecting) being in the competitive pool. Let the waiting begin!

BTW, anyone have any idea how long we will wait. For the accepted applicants in the past, anyone know how often they take people out of the competitive pool to grant acceptances/rejections? Are we pretty likely to not hear anything more from them until March/April after everyone has been interviewed?

I'm waiting too 🙁
I guess that was expected though.

OHHH UW...
You do this to me every year.
You do this to me 3 years in a row.
It's like being "THAT girl" in an abusive relationship..
The man keeps beating me down, telling me I'm just not good enough, and I keep coming back for more...

I tell ya, applying to UW falls in that gray area between self-deprication and masochism.... Clearly, if you interview a person 3 years in a row, put them on the competitive list each time, put them on the unranked wait-list twice, there's just SOMETHING WRONG with your interview screening...
*here's to hoping the third time's a charm...* :luck:

Wow, okay, no more self pity when it's only my second time around.... Are you applying other places this year too? I understand the "THAT girl" feeling. So abused... So, so abused. 😛 Good luck to you.

Thanks for your support!
I am applying everywhere (including DO)
I was wait-listed at three places last year, and unfortunately, didn't get off any lists...
here's hoping it goes better this year...
and who knows? UW MIGHT even decide to put me out of my misery and accept me in March
but good luck to you too!!! 😀

I've read every post of this thread and realized that no one got accepted from University of Washington yet. MOst of you were put in competitive pool. Does that mean they haven't offered any acceptance yet? That would be scary. I was interviewed last Wednesday, i'm not sure how it went, but it was really discouraging to know that not a lot of interviewees are accepted.

Any thoughts? So, NO ADVANTAGE AT ALL FOR INTERVIEW EARLY.

I don't think there is any advantage really to interviewing early (my pre-med advisor said it might even be an advantage to interview later at the UW!) ACK! From what I've heard, they don't accept many people at the EXCOM meetings, especially not this early. But I know people who have been on the competitive list for only a few weeks before getting an acceptance and others who have been on the list until April... only to be put on an alternate list for more waiting.... and ultimately rejected. I just wish I knew how this would all turn out!!! 😱

Good luck to you, btw! :luck:

So, from what I have heard from friends who are at UWSOM:
At each EXCOM meeting, they roughly accept 10%, reject 10% and competitve pool the remaining 80% from each group...
And yes, your stay in the pool is undetermined, as they meet regularly (I think at least once a month?) to go thru the ppl in the pool again.
As much as UW is a rolling admissions school, they kinda aren't. They fill about 65%, and pull the rest out of the pool in March/April...
oh well. the system isn't perfect anywhere...
At Utah, they tell you right off the bat that they are not rolling admissions, and that you will most likely not hear until March...
So, I will be swimmin' in the deep end, getting pruney hands until March... 🙄

Have you already interviewed at Utah? I have an interview in a week and a half. Looks like I'll be swimming with you, waiting to hear from these two schools (my top picks)...unless Utah says no thanks right away.

I have. I interviewed at Utah two weeks ago.
and i'm SURE you will not get rejected from Utah. if anything, you will probably get in before me (I am unfortunately, OOS)
They are my top picks too! and oh- you will DROOL when you see the new building. I could choose utah solely based on that building (that, and the couches and classroom seats are sooo comfy 😉 )
well, good luck...
the water is er- lukewarm at this end, but you're welcome to splash on by...

To all UWSOM applicants:

I posted this elsewhere, but UW applicants may be more likely to read this under this thread:

Does anyone know how the UW looks at Letters of Intent? I read somewhere that in-state Universities (especially those that many people are interested in, i.e. UW) may assume that most in-state applicants will attend their school if given an acceptance since tuition is so great, etc. Anyone know the extent of truth to this? Also, is there any down-side to sending a letter of intent if it really is the school that I want to go to and I am willing to withdraw applications from all other schools upon acceptance?

Thanks in advance for any info!

I hope that you didn't turn down other acceptances just on the chance that you would be accepted to UW the following year. I have heard of people doing that and it makes me sick.

I had a perfect GPA in Chemical Engineering, a solid MCAT, residency in the state of Washington, and what I felt was the best interview of my life and was still stuck in the competitive pool. Then I interviewed at another school and was accepted in less than a week so I chose to go there. Then UW accepted me 9 months after my interview!

Please don't put all of your eggs in the UW basket. There are plenty of better schools out there that don't make you jump through hoops to get in. Getting out of Washington state has been a great experience for me and I wouldn't do anything different.

Thank you for your advice...
but trust me when I say, I am not stupid enough to put all of my hopes and dreams in one UW basket.
I am just the unfortunate type with above ave. grades and mcats that seems to get waitlisted somewhere or another every year, and never make it off a list (got waitlisted at three schools last year, and got nowhere).
😀
but thanks anyway!

your story makes me sad... i also have great grades, high test scores, extensive research and clinical experiences, and washington residency... and was nervous at the interview but don't think i was inappropriatte or bombed it. and i'm in the wait pool now 🙁 And i don't want to wait for 9 months to hear back from UWSOM.
Do you think they torture us like this on purpose?

Who knows? They're probably just proud (maybe overly proud, maybe not). The system must be working for them or they'd change it. Anyway, I just figure that if your grades and GPA are okay, then you have done your best and that's all you can do. At that point, it's all in UW's hands.

Someone came and congratulated me after being accepted and I said "don't congratulate me, congratulate them, it was their decision."

Anyway, don't be sad for me, I'm not. In the end, it all comes down to your scores on the board exams (USMLE) for residency. Good luck to everyone in the process, especially those from Wazzu.

As someone who was in the competitive pool last year, the waiting is tough. Real tough. People who get their acceptances days after their interview will never be able to fully empathize with how much being in limbo sucks. But just remember that you are one step closer to being admitted. There are a bunch of people who get flat out rejected post-interview every year, not to mention how many don't even get to the interview stage. Near the end of the wait I almost wanted to get a rejection letter in the mail because any decision was better than no decision, but instead a big brown envelope came and I'm now in my first year at UW. So there is hope!

I could give those of you in the competitive pool the advice to relax and enjoy the precious free time you have before med school starts, but I still remember what it was like to be in your position last year and how impossible it was to just chill. So instead I'll say have fun checking your e-mail 5 times a day until April. 🙂 And for those of you who don't get into UW, you will get into medical school and become a wonderful doctor, so don't give up hope. Good luck everyone!

Sakura- did you write a letter of intent to UW last year? Just curious... 🙂

FYI....I wrote 2 last year.... with no luck. Or maybe that got me on the unranked list instead of rejected. Who knows!

I did, though it was more like a combination of an application update (did a couple of new things between January and March) and a letter of intent. I have no idea whether anyone actually read my letter or how much effect it had on my app, but I figured it probaly wouldn't hurt and just sent one in. You may want to call the admissions office and see what UWSOM's view is if you want a more official answer to your question, I remember how nice people were there when they answered my questions.
