What vaccinations do we need (I have heard of Hep B) and when do we have to start getting these? I have not been notified by any school yet of vaccinations so I was wondering if it's left up to me to take the initiative.

It depends on the school and the vaccinations are really for when you start you clinical rotations because the hospitals require them. You need them all or you need to show titers for them. MMR, HEP B, Varricella, DTP, if there is a vaccine you will need it.

I thought we needed the Hep B vaccine before starting school because we are going to be exposed to patients, albeit not too many.

Our school had an immunisation schedule set up for the students in the first couple of months. I think it really depends on where you're going. You should give student services an email and inquire about it for confirmation.

Most schools (after acceptance, usually in the summer) will send you a form to be completed by your physician showing that you are up to date with vaccines. They tend to be the standard TB test, tetanus, MMR, varicella, plus Hep B. Since Hep B is 3 installment shots to be taken spread out over a half a year, you are likely going to need to get the final installment or two once you have matriculated (and schools generally get you a cheap deal at Student Health for this). At most schools you actually will have modest exposure to patients, and so they like you to get your Hep B shots completed during your first year.
