i will attend a 4 week externship at Vandy this June...anything i need to know about the program?....will they let me do hands on stuff and many more...

It was a nice externship when I went 3 years ago... I got to scrub into all the cases place some screws and do alot of lacs. I did not get to do much dentoalveolar. The free call room, and access to the resident library was a good resource to read about the surgeries ahead of time. Nashville was also fun. You should have a nice time.

Thanks for the reply Extraction... by the way, how often were you on call in Vandy and what was their attitudes toward externs...like what was their expectations of you when you went there...

They seemed receptive to externs, but that will vary on the extern's attitude and the residents on-service. Overall the attendings were very receptive. They had taken a few former externs as residents, which is why I externed there... I really liked the program and ranked it high on my match list... be forewarned they require a high undergraduate GPA to get into their program as a requirement of the medical school. Also, Vandy's med school tuition is expensive.
Be polite, work hard, so enthusiasm, read ahead on the surgeries prior to going to the OR and you'll be fine... I believe the call was Q3.

word of mouth..... in general, externships usually help you in getting a spot at the program where you extern. that is of course assuming you do a good job and don't behave like an a$$.
