I heard through the grapevine that Vanderbilt did not fill all their spots a couple of years recently and they had to scramble to fill....any explanations or opinions?

VU has a history of being a VERY toxic ob residency. They had to let their past chair "step down" b/c of his past practices. I am at vandy and am starting ob next sem...I have tons of classmates who did OB and they all saying they would not do their resideny there... The residents are generally not happy. I have heard this from most med students, and 3 current residents. but who knows... however you gotta wonder when a program keeps on getting black listed like this.... and when your own med students tell u not to apply... hhmmm..... I hear its reputation is not that great either. I asked my friends if things have gotten better this year, and they say no. but i have no personal experience yet,

However an up and coming program is at Meharry. The chair is from Harvard. She started the ob program within the last year. has tons of accolades. So if you are looking for a non-tox, up and coming program this is a good one i hear. A classmate did an elective there and loved it.the chair is also an expert in REI, was on several past federal committess evaluating RU-486 etc... but its a new program. BUT the pro is the chair has good national influence....

I agree that that new chair is supposed to be excellent and the program is up and coming. However, Meharry is generally regarded as one of the worst US med schools. Their avg MCAT is below a 28. At least Vandy has somewhat of a "name." But I also have to agree that I have not heard great things about their OB program (i did not apply there).
Good luck!

I am not sure that comment about MMC is warranted or needed. I don;t think any of use have the right to make such a strong statement about any school. When the MMC students come to vandy, they have tons more clinical skills then we do. They are learn on a more hands on approach. I can;t say that for us or most big schools were you are fighting with the residents to try to learn or do stuff. Their hospital (metro) is one of the best places to learn because the docs are friendly and very hands on... I try to go there as much as I can.... as do many classmates.

and FYI: a few years ago the highest reported Step 1 score came from MMC.

I just want to put that out there, and I hope this puts an end to this thread... anyways, my point is that it is a good program for OBGYN. that is all.

I did my residency at Vanderbilt and so I feel I can speak about it with a little authority.

This is a copy of a post I made several months ago....

Vanderbilt is a excellent residency that will only get better over the next several years. The senior residents have all been able to accomplish their professional goals (3 private practice, 2 academic practice, 1 fellowship). You get to train with some of the more approachable and better known OB/GYN's in the country who have edited and written the major texts in the specialty. Dr. Gabbe (Gabbe's obstetrics) helps you learn diabetes in diabetic clinic, Dr. Jones (Telinde's gynecology) teaches in gyn oncology, Dr. Zimmerman (chapters in Telindes and past president of Society of Pelvic and Recontructive Surgery) teaches vaginal surgery. These are just of the few people who you will work with in a new financially stable hospital.
There aren't any fellows at Vanderbilt which means you are the first assist for radical hysterectomies, complex pelvic cases, and high risk OB cases.
The new chair is Dr. Nancy Chescheir from UNC and she has been universally lauded for her positive impact on the program.
Vanderbilt should be on everyone's list of places to interview if possible. The hospital is up to date and new, Nashville is a great city, and the opportunity to be a balanced OB/GYN with options for private practice or fellowship are there. Good luck.

I have to respectfully disagree with the "toxic" characterization of Vandy. Really, anyone who is in fact a student at Vandy would not make such a statement (Karen, I'm looking at you). One of the greatest things about Vandy is how well we are treated. Now, we do work hard, but the administration treats us superbly well, ancillary services are excellent, and our computer chart and ordering system is amongst the best (if not the best) in the nation.
Along these lines, I would make several points:
1. If you want to be a good Gyn surgeon, Vandy is without a doubt one of the best residencies in the nation. Since we do not have a GynOnc fellowship, but have a lot of GynOnc Sx and care, you get unprecedented training in Sx's.
Not to mention that Dr. Howard Jones, as mentioned above, is Vandy faculty.
2. Fantastic MFM training with great volume of high-risk pregnancies, and a lot of teaching faculty.
3. New chair (Dr. Chescheir) who is wholly impressive. One of the nicest Dept. chairs I've met, but also remarkably effective and efficient.
4. Vandy environment, which is one of fantastic support from other specialties.
5. Vandy is building additional research buildings and hospital expansions at a frantic pace (2nd or 3rd in the nation for growth).

In conclusion, people interested in Gyn, GynOnc and MFM should definitely look at Vandy given excellent training. Now, we work very hard, but that is in no small part a prerequisite for excellent surgical and critical care training.

Aleks.

Thank you all for your replies. I will take them all into consideration - both good and bad. I do plan on interviewing at Vanderbilt and will take my experiences there as well as your comments into consideration when formulating an opinion on the program.

Once again...thank you.
