Hey, I don't know if this is for the Allopathic forum, please feel free to move this thread to that forum if it falls under that topic.

What is up with Vanderbilt's match list this year?

http://www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/reporter/index.html?ID=2575

Nobody matched into anesthesia, and while there were good matches into some specialties, overall the school looks like it's primary care based on the match. In addition, it looks like a handful of people had to scramble.

Maybe I'm looking at this matchlist wrong, I know Vanderbilt is a great school, but can somebody clarify this? 😱

Thanks.

no derm matches...

No neurosurgery or plastics either... am I looking at this wrong?!

Every class has its unique personality. The Vandy class the year before was largely surgeons. This year it was mostly medicine. Just depends on the personality of the ppl within the class. And I don't buy into the whole "oh, look..no one matched into derm, ortho, plastics, blah blah" argument. If ppl wanted to match into that...I'm sure they woulda matched somewhere. But if someone really wanted to do family practice...that shouldn't be seen as a 'weaker' match. There are always different reasons why a person chose to rank a location/hospital or pick a specialty. I think it's refreshing that this years class has relatively more ppl going into primary care since Vandy has been notorious for sending out tons of specialists every year.

Point taken, however there are around 100 students in each class, and you're telling me that not even one was interested in derm, plastics, neuro, etc.? I find that very hard to believe.

Maybe it's something about the school itself that is deterring these students. At every other match list I've seen from other schools, students generally match into a wide array of specialties, with at least one matching into the competitive ones. It just doesn't make much sense to me, and I'm wondering if there is some sort of explanation.

I have to agree with Goya that every class has its unique personality...plus, Vandy's med class only consists of 100 or so students so it's hard to make broad generalizations.

Here's the 2002 match list:
http://www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/reporter/?ID=2001

5 Anesthesiology
2 Derm
3 Plastics
5 Ophthalmology
5 Neuro
etc.

Point is, Vandy will get you where you need to go, period.

wow...5 neurosurgery last year.....that's quite a few.

You must be on crack.

Ortho 5
ENT 5
Urology 5
Rad Onc 2
Rad 2

And most of the IM and Peds matches are at top tier programs.

Yeah, I would pay more attention to the programs students matched in because there is a chance nobody wanted those residencies.

I hope you're not trying to say nobody wanted Urology, Rad Onc, Ortho, ENT, and Rads residencies, because these are some of the most competitive. Many applicants would give anything to even match anywhere in these fields.

Why do such a ridiculously large number of students stay at vandy (22 out of 92??) for residency?

I haven't been to Nashville but I have only heard wonderful things about the city and people. Also the hospital is not so damned bad either. From what I hear the facilities are awesome and faculty is very approachable. Why not stay if you are accepted to a first rate residency?

What is it with you trying to knock Vandy so much anyhow? It seems like you are trying o find things wrong with it. Just an observation...

One of my relatives got in and I already know all the good things about Vandy, so I am just trying to see if there are any shortcomings.

I already know the negatives about the other programs my relative got into.

Peace
🙂

Resident training at Vandy is very benign. That's why a lot of people stay. Also a) people are from the south b) people liked Vandy c) it's prolly easier to stay at a place where you know everyone on the staff already.
