Hey, anyone out there? I had a late interview and am waiting for the March decisions... but I would love to hear from anyone who already got in or is also waiting on them. What did you think of the school compared to others? Etc.... random thoughts, breadsticks...

I like VCU's facilities. The students were nice and friendly. The school is also close to home. I will go here if nothing new happens for me.

hey...i'm currently a first year at mcv...couldnt find a thread for current students so i thought i'd re: to this

I got accepted into VCU/MCV in Oct. and am really enthusiastic about the school. I'm from the West Coast. When I was there for my interview I just had a good overall sense, with the bustling hospital, the teaching facilities, and the friendliness of the students. I hear parking in Richmond and around the med. center is somewhat of a pain, but I'm sure there are solutions to that problem. It also seems to have ample research opportunities.

i think the last set of offers went out today, so anyone def goin to MCV next year?

as for me, not definite, but pretty sure

Count me in! I definitely enjoyed my visit to Richmond, and I am looking forward to starting classes.

I'm starting in the fall!! YAY!!!!
I'm so excited. They should be sending us a link with our own little forum for the incoming class....they're just taking forever!!!
I can't wait to meet everyone.

It's a dream come true! I'll be there next year too. Loved the school and the area. Really excited to meet everyone. 🙂 🙂

VCU in the house!!

Where's everyone at...I'm dying to meet people. I don't know anyone or anything at Richmond...and yes, I am afraid of being robbed AND raped if I wander into the wrong part of town.

Just kidding...Richmond looks awesome.

Anyone from the West Coast reading this forum who's planning on going to VCU this fall?

Congrats, y'all. If you have any questions from an old salt like myself just let me know. I'll try and get my hands on the 2006 match list.

MCV Class of 2005
Bump

I'm from Northern VA. I've been down a coupla times to visit and have a couple of friends in 2nd/3rd yr. My friends are negative so I can't ask them how they like the school ( I still love 'em).
I'm also kinda scared of the neighborhood. Who wants to be my body guard if I need to stay in the lab/library late??? Haha...no seriously!

I'll be there also 😀 I grew up in the area if anyone has any questions!

If I may interject here, if I had a roommate and wasn't really interested in walking to bars, I'd live at Malvern Manor. Hardwood floors, washer dryers, and they're right next to Carytown and Krogers/Ukropts. They're also right next to the downtown expressway, which is a toll road but can have you at MCV in minutes with little traffic.

If you want to be near campus, then you're looking at the places in Shockoe Bottom/Shockoe Slip, like the River Lofts at Tobacco Row, or one of the Shockoe Properties. A very popular place for M1s is Trolley Square, which has the added bonus of being on the campus-connector shuttle line. I've heard it's kind of ghetto inside, however, which leads to an annual migration of rising M2s out of Trolley Square every year.

VCU has a listing board for rental properties, as well, buried somewhere in its website. Good luck.

Wow. Thanks! That gives me a lot of places to look out for when I come place hunting. What about for someone like me who just wants to be near campus in a semi-decent area. I don't have a roommate or anything and I don't want to break the bank. I don't even know how much I should be looking at. Is on-campus housing cheap compared to off-campus or is it a better deal to find an apartment?
I have a friend (M2 at VCU) who lives in the dorms (wasn't crazy about the teeny tiny room she had and having to share bathroom facilities) and a friend who lives in Short Pump (lovely area- kinda long drive tho). Any ideas?

I say go with Short Pump, hands down. It's not a long drive, 20 minutes max. I'll be living in shortpump -- there are 500 million places to choose from. Try apartmentguide.com and look at the "West End" Richmond section. I don't know about the dorms. But I haven't lived in a dorm since freshman year and I am never going back, haha. One bedroom apartments in West End are about $600-750 per month for something decent. But there are always crazy specials which make everything more affordable.

Hey Havarti666, by any chance do you know when you will have to buy the stethoscope and all the medical stuff (I just looked at the MCV Bookstore and it will cost me around $700 for everything, I guess I will need it sooner or later)? And also how critical is it to have a car your first year (ie. do you do a lot of clinical work outside of the MCV area?) Thank you so much.

And to all of my future classmates, congrat guys and have anyone heard anything from VCU since our acceptance?

PS: can anyone change the thread title to "VCU/MCV Class of 2010" and remove the question marks? haha somehow this really bother me 😕 oh yes, I will be one of your neurotic classmate.

Nope. Haven't heard anything further from VCU yet but we should be getting some sort of info pretty soon.
And, it's Ok. You can sit next to me in class because the question marks bothered me too.

Did anyone get any financial aid info after sending in FAFSA? If so, how long did it take?

Ok first of all, Havarti666 you absolutely rock! All of your info has been extremely helpful. Keep it coming!!

Second, Dr. Hopeless and Lilmissangel, it's hilarious that you mentioned the question marks because they were really bothering me too. Maybe we pre-meds (or should I say "soon to be meds") really are all the same!

nope and mine has been in a couple months. The form they gave out says that the earliest we will hear is April. So that should be coming soon.

Yeah I turned mine in a while back too, via online. So far I haven't heard a single thing yet. All I got was an email from FAFSA and it said that my thing was processed.

I posted this in pre-allo (for some reason). I think it makes more sense to put it here, for anyone who is curious...

Parking at MCV does blow. Here are the options circa 2001-2005:

1. "Bottom of the hill" parking - a couple of pay-as-you-go lots down Broad St. They have consistently jacked their prices every year, which adds up after awhile. The trek up the hill is pretty miserable, as well. Cars zoom past and blow exhaust in your face, animals die in the brush and stink for weeks. Charming.

Oh, and then there was Gaston, the hurricane that unexpectedly poured 12 inches of rain on the city in late 2004. Here is what the lot turned into:

richmond_storm11.jpg

And yes, my car was drowned. Got a good payout though, since the mileage on my electronic odometer couldn't be verified. Mmmmmm, WATER DAMAGE.

2. Campus pay lots (I lot, etc.) - remote lot that runs a shuttle to campus. A decent option for your 3rd year rotations, since you will be arriving early enough to get a decent spot. It's walkable to campus in about 20 min. One important thing to note is that for certain rotations with horrible hours (surgery and OB/GYN) you can get a temporary pass for one of the decks right next to the med center. This will be a Godsend when you're creeping to school at 4:45 AM.

3. Da bus - when I started every VCU student got a free bus pass that was good for unlimited rides during the whole semester. They later started charging for it. It's a good deal if you don't mind using it.

4. Da shuttle - my favorite. If you live near the undergrad campus you can take the free campus connector shuttle.

5. Bike - some of my classmates were religious cyclists, even in the winter months. I guess there's no accounting for sanity.

6. Abandon class - go study at the University of Richmond Law Library, instead. You'll be glad you did. Only come to campus for anatomy labs, tests and small groups. It only works for two years, but that'll get you half way home.

7. Abandon school - well, not really. There are quite a few rotations that you can do away from MCV, however, at places like the VA (free parking) and Riverside for OB (free parking and free food). If you're sly, you can end up spending a lot less time on campus than you might think, even during clinicals.

You really are a god-send...Thanks so much for all this info. I'm gonna print these out and preach to those unfortunate enough not to have discovered SDN come august.
Hmmm....were you at the VCU Open House on the 25th by any chance?

So what is everyone up to before school starts? Any cool plans/jobs for the summer. I have no plans and am open to ideas. If your job is hiring let me know....

Wouldn't you want to just relax before the 4 years of hell? well sort of like 3 years of hell, at the least that is what one med student said to me

By the way, any of you guys buying new computers? desktop, laptop, or tablet......

oh by the way, our orientation website is up, but no one said anything about it, I came across it by chance. Did I miss out on an email?

Well, I took a year off after I finished undergrad, so I've been relaxing for a year....
To access the forum it said to go to the 'Matriculation Status Page located in the Orientation section of 2006 Application Website.'. I clicked on the link and it didn't work. Any ideas guys?

yeah I saw that too, but I think the site is not officially launch yet, so we shouldn't even know about it. Anyone want to call them?

As anyone heard about a second look weekend? I read something in one of the forums about a second look for April 7th and 8th, but I have not received any such info in the mail (although some of my mail are being returned by the post office).

I had this really weird dream the other night. I had a dream that I received a package from VCU. It looked like there was book in there. I was so excited...simply because I havent heard anything for a while and I'm not terribly busy right now so it's all I think about.
Well, I don't remember my dreams very well, so there's nothing else to it. I don't know what was in the package...

But I do know that the class of 2009 receieved a book in the summer that they were supposed to read before the start of classes (real life, not in a dream)...so I guess I thought ours should be arrived and it popped in my dreams.

I printed off our class and exam schedule and I got really excited ! 😀

But then I saw the book list - eh, that looks expensive!!! 😱

Havarti666 said:
Regarding books, the only things you need to buy M1 year are High Yield Embryology, the recommended neuroanatomy atlases, and a gross anatomy atlas. I liked Netter's, because the relationships were more clearly defined (even though they are somewhat idealized in his representations). Some folks prefer Grant's. In any case, pick them up as you go. If you take the "required book list" to the store on day one, and purchase (waste) hundreds of dollars on biochem, genetics and pop med texts, you'll end up being pissed off later. Stick to the syllabus. The syllabus is key.

Hmmm, actually you should also get the STARS Physiology book (the one by Costanzo, your future physiology professor). It's a great book, and will come in handy later on. That reminds me, there will be a need to purchase more resources when studying for Step 1, but you can cross that bridge in a couple of years.

So what exactly do you reference for a certain subject when you have not bought the book? just curious. We have "no text required" listed for Physiology...wierd.

You read the syllabus.
A syllabus is not the same thing it is in undergrad (one sheet of paper). In med school it is all the notes for the class. Some of our syllabi will not fit in a 3-inch binder. My friend has two loooong bookshelves filled with her M1 and M2 syllabi in big fat binders. It'll be fun..you'll see.

Have I completely been missing out on emails sent by VCU? I have heard nothing about how to access the curriculum and list of required/recommended texts. I was accepted back in October and haven't heard anything from VCU since then. Could you let me know how you received this information? Thanks.

Yeah, someone found the orientation website that has NOT been released yet.
http://www.admissions.som.vcu.edu/orientation/

But they have put a lot of info on there so far. I'm sure we will get an email about it once they have finished the site.

Yeah you are not the only one, MCV has been really quite lately. Can anyone explain to me what the "Inner-City / Rural Preceptorship" is all about? I been reading about it and I am somewhat lost 😕 If anything I will choose the inner-city option.

PS: How many of you guys are bringing a car? I survived undergrad without a car for like 4 years, but I guess I will need one now. I am just not sure on how often I have to use the thing.

I plan on bringing a car - if you live near campus for M1 and M2 you could get by without one, but having a car would make things a bit easier. Speaking of which, does anyone know when you're supposed to sign up for student parking spots and how the parking system works -- is it really as awful as is rumored?

i was browsing the website and on the CBIL site they have a facebook of the class of 09, anyone know when they'll start putting our class' facebook together? i guess they'd have to wait till summer at the earliest so they know which accepted students are withdrawing and goin to other schools..

You haven't missed any emails. I know this info because I have friends who are M2's and M3's at VCU and I visited them a couple of weeks ago...

Anyone get financial aid package yet? I know they send them in April. I know we just need to send in FAFSA and a credit report rating. Is that right?

Wow, hardly anyone is married!

I've heard a good chunk of med students are married (or will get married during med school) so if you're in that catergory, you'll find plenty of other comrades

maaan. i still have to fill that thing out!!!
it scares me!!!
will i be at a disadvantage in terms of getting aid the later I fill it out???

seriously tho, I've heard a good chunk of med students are married (or will get married during med school) so if you're in that catergory, you'll find plenty of other comrades

Yeah sadly enough....... haha any hot girl will be in a serious relationship 😱, perhaps some exception, but not many. Time to move to the pharmacy school or dental school right next door

But yeah I heard at MCV, everyone (like 90%) is in a serious relationship by their 3rd year.

PS: As for your FAFSA lilmissangel, you can leave out your parent information if you want, but then you might not get any scholarship. But your loan is solely depending on you, at the least that is what the fafsa people told me.

Lots and lots of VCU and engineering kids at VCU/MCV. Surprisingly, lots people are unmarried which is good since I have never even dated :meanie: .

I haven't filled it out either...still waiting for my tax return info. I think we'll be ok though.

And as for the low number of married people, I think it's great...at least for a single guy like me! 😀
Although I think there should be plenty of cute single girls in the other professional schools at VCU...or even undergrads, if that's your thing!
