Okay...I am trying to figure out how to get around in NYC. Is anyone from this area or would they be able to help me out?
If you want, I will call you and you can help me 🙂 🙂 🙂
Otherwise, private message me because I am lost...very...very...very...lost.
I need to figure out what hotels I can stay at in the areas...I was looking at expedia and it basically told me nothing about the area. Should I just stay in one hotel for the whole week and catch taxis to various schools? Or should I switch around to various hotels depending on where the school is?
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

I know the city pretty well and this is my bit of advice. The transportation system (e.g. subway) will bring you anywhere you need to go for interviews. All the schools are generally within 30 minutes of each other.

NYC is a great city because it is set up, for the most part, like a grid. So the 31st street, which runs east-west, is south, by one block, of 32cd street. This continues exactly like this all the way up to Columbia area 170th street. The "Avenues", e.g. 3rd Avenue, run north and south. So picture the grid.

My advice is to get one hotel room near on the east side near lets say 59th street. I am saying this because access to Laguardia or JFK are a lot easier because the 59th Street Bridge runs brings you right into Brooklyn and the airports. So if you have an interview at Cornell, Columbia and Sinai, I would say go to the Upper East side for a hotel and stay somewhere between the 50 and 70s. However, these areas will run you a few extra duckets for rooms. (But, that is NYC). Thus you have access to all three schools. If you have one at ALbert Einstein which is in the Bronx, you can catch a subway up to that area. It takes about 30 minutes.

Anymore questions don't hesitate to ask.

hey scooby,

where are you interviewing?

i'm from nyc, so if you have any questions, feel free to IM me (acnikyj) and ask...

right now the city is having interesting transportation issues due to the terrorist crisis, but the changes are pretty straighforward... anyway, i'd be glad to help you out.

scooby,
i suggest you have the real ny experience and chill with the bums. just bring your own sleeping bag, and you'll save a lot of $$ which you were worried about. and then talk about it during your interview so they are deeply touched by what an altruistic and caring person you are...

If you really want to impress the interviewers, you should go and help the clean up efforts over night (saves you the hotel costs) and be able to talk about it during the interview. It will be a good cause and a great icebreaker. 😉
