Hello this is my first post on this forum. I want to pursue dentistry and want to attend Manipal in India where my dad studied. However, I am unaware of the rules and procedures that take place when you return from studies in India to the United States. Is it true that 2 more years of education are compulsory? How long does it take in India? Any thoughts, experiences, or knowledge would greatly be appreciated.

hi
dental edu in india is regular 4yr course with one year internship.......and when you come back to US you have to undergo additional 2year international dentist program..
hope this helps

it doesn't seem then that there is any real benefits except saving one year. I am really confused at what to do at this point. Has anyone done dentistry abroad? What was the experience coming back? Thanks.

i wud say tough competition....only few colleges offer 2 yr program and some have 3 yrs program called the ADVANCED STANDING PROGRAM FOR FOREIGN TRAINED DENTISTS..and to get into those programs u HAVE to have a minimum of 90 in ur national board part 1 (for some u need part 2 too) and have a great GPA .
i think going thru DAT and then applying to regular dental school is zillion times easier...thts my opinion..
hope it helps....u can chek the WWW.ADA.ORG for future reference

If you are very studious and you are willing to put in more effort during your school in India, you can blindly go ahead and get your BDS from India and come here for the advanced standing program. But you must realize that if the competition is this high the past couple years, 5 years down it is going to stink!! So you can always expect more and more to be placed on your resume. It may even go to the extent that all schools require part 1 and part 2 above 90. You never know!! But again, if you are willing to work hard, you can do it!! If I were you, the better option would be to do a BS in something like Biology, accounting or anything... (if you look up threads in the pre-dental forum there will be more info on that) and apply as a regular dental student like kadilema says!! But if you are positive you will work hard in dental school in India, you can go ahead.

It is upto you to decide what you want and what you are capable of!!

Hey....I am from Manipal.
So many NRI's from Manipal every year join Advanced standing at USA.
It takes 4 years of study+one year of compulsary internship.
You come back to US and take up the NDBE part 1 exam. Its best to take during the internship.Schools at US offer 2-3 year programs.

Hope this helps.
