Village or Apartment??

Hi. I have just been accepted to Murdoch University for their veterinary program. I am 23 and am debating whether or not to stay in the village or try to get a room from someone renting. Im 23 and will be far from home (USA). I dont know the area of Perth, and am unsure if it is wise to venture out on my own. If I could room with current vet students I dont think it would be as bad. Does anyone have any suggestions??
