I was just wondering whether anyone else got an email from [email protected] because I think it may be a virus/worm. The subject is Re:Test and has a .zip attachement that my computer says is a virus.

I frequently get these kinda emails with a zipped attachment that contain worms. But the uic.edu address definitely has me curious.

I didn't get any emails from UIC with a zip file attached.

why don't you email or call her to ask if she's sent you something?

Would there be any reason she would email you something?

Are you currently a UIC undergrad? If you are you probably are aware of the virus that hijacks email addresses and sends viruses to others on UIC's system. If you think this is the case, don't open the file.

Since your computer is telling you the zip file is a virus, don't open it. Email Rhonda M and ask her if she sent you something, and if yes, tell her to scan her computer for viruses (she can get the program free from the accc website at UIC).

Oh my, I don't want to seem rude, but it is because of people like you that email viruses spread.

First of all, if you do not know the sender, don't download the file! People can send email from any address they want. If you give me your email I can demonstrate this by sending you an email from any [email protected]... etc.

Second of all, if you suspect that you know the person or that it may be from a med school, do not open the file immediately, but reply and ask them what the attachment is! More than likely you will find the email is fake.

Sorry if I sound rude, but I get sick of hearing about these email viruses that spread when they could all be avoided if people used a little common sense and didn't download files from unknown people!

there's a virus that went around nebraska a few months back that would scour a computer's hard drive for e-mail addresses and then e-mail itself out to anyone who's e-mail it found. it was some sort of .zip virus. i'd delete it and call them for a fresh new e-mail.

I checked it w/mic. outlook and saw an attach.
I didn't open the attach. so I think I'm fine.

thanks to everyone for the advice especially skiz knot for the address. i've emailed rhondam, so I'll let everyone know how its going.

btw, i don't think its a fault with my computer because I wasn't on my computer. It was through my school's web-based email, and I was on one of their cpu's.

its almost assuredly a virus.

Rhonda Meyer-Boeke emailed me back. She said,

no it wasn't legitimate. This virus has been going around the UIC campus.
You have to use the 7/19/04 version of Symantec Anti-Virus software to get rid of it.
Rhonda
