Hi everyone,
I am a regular browser of this forum and is really informative. So thought of posting in my question
I just finished with my part 1 exams and am really in a state of fix as the rest of u,regarding the schools to apply, enormous fee structure etc.But i was wondering...incase we don't have a green card or a citizenship here and are on a dependent visa ,then shift to student visa while in school.....wht happens when we come out??Does anyone sponser for a H-1 ,like a healthcenter..or else, wht is to be done with the huge loan+interest..when we can't work??I AM LOST!!
One more...wht to do for schools with sept 15th as deadline,if we get results only by12th sept[which is a friday and sept 15th..monday!!]
PLEASE HELP!!🙁
thank u all in advance.

Those are good questions and should be thought of before coming to the US.

My friend is Canadian and he is having difficulty getting an OPT (optional practical training) to do a one year residencey!😳

Regarding the loan. If you are not a permanent resident, citizen, or have some other special status such as a political refugee; you may have trouble getting a loan unless you can find a credit worthy cosigner. Lenders know that it is almost impossible to collect on a defaulted unsecurred loan if the sole debtor chooses to leave the USA.

Seriously ?? I thought OPT was very easy to get. Was there any particular problem in his case that they hesitated? I think its also important to apply for it before F-1 visa expires. I am Canadian too and I was always told OPT was "no problem".

HI DrRob

what difficulties is ur friend facing in getting an OPT? I was just curious since I have applied for OPT too ( but I have applied after completing my MBA).

I don't know exactly what the problem was, but it is 3 months into the residency and he still doesn't have it yet - probably disorganization on his part - now he has to get a TN work visa so he can stay in the residency.

I think you will be ok if you have an up to date passport - I know he had problems with this and his drivers license and also didn't have his Social Security Number. If you plan on getting OPT I would check all the requirements way ahead of time. I know that it is minimal 3 mos to process and with 9/11 everything is probably worse.

I worked in the US for a year but on a TN - its much easier to get.

Hi DrRob,

From what I have heard, if u apply through regular mail, they usually say it takes 3 mths but most of the time it takes more than 3 mths some times even 5 mths.
and nowadays they have a provision to apply online and they say it is faster and should be done within 2 mths. but so far i have not personally come accross anyone who has gotten the OPT within 2 mths.
