Hi folks!

Happy holidays to everyone. I am just curious -- what type of volunteer work opportunities are there in a hospital? I have heard lots of volunteers just push carts and such. If you could give me some examples..that would be great. I live near Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill. So, in future I would like to try to get a volunteer job.

Also, if I find something in a doctor's office with the intention to learn how he practices medicine..etc..would that be considered 'experience'? or does it have to be in a hospital setting?

And lastly, what about doing research in non-medical field? I am thinking about doing a M.S thesis (in Electrical Engineering), but if the research work I do can be a plus point in my medical application..I think I will be more enthusiastic.

Would love to get your input on this.

Arigato gozaimashta!

It depends on the hospital. I volunteered in a local ER, and most of what I did was wheel patients back and forth between the ER and the CT scanner. However, they now have a program called "Scribe," where you shadow a doc in the ER for a whole shift (once or twice a week), writing down their orders, diagnoses, etc. I haven't done it myself, but I'd imagine you can pick up a lot in the process.

One option, a bit more exiting and hands on, is taking an EMT class and volunteering. You'd have to check in your area to see if there are any volunteer ambulance opportunities. It really varies by area. I've been doing this for a while now, and it can be pretty exciting at times.

Another option is to find a local clinic. Because of the need for help, they will let you do lots more hands-on type work. The EMT idea is great also. What about a phlebotomy position?
Also, go to your Pre-Med office and ask for a list of volunteer opportunities. I am sure you will find something! Good luck

I volunteer in the E.D. at Duke. You can go to Duke and get an application from Mrs Getzelman at the auxiliary volunteer office in the hospital. As long as your refrences check you, you should be able to do it.

Go to a VA Hospital! There's just no comparison. They definitely will let you have direct patient contact!!
