have predents listed volunteer work at the hospital as a form of community service?

or do admissions officers see hospital work as a sign that you're commited to medicine and not dentistry?

any advice is appreciated because i don't want admissions officers to think that i'm interested in medicine if i volunteer at the hospital

Korndoctor,

There is nothing wrong with putting medical center volunteer work under dental school application. In fact, it's great that you have explored both dentistry and medicine. Just be prepared to answer when the admission officers ask you why you chose dentistry over medicine. Good luck!

well i just want to volunteer at a hospital because i enjoy community service and the hospital setting but i have no intention of going into medicine. I was just wondering if students had this type of mentallity and was wondering how adminsions officers would think of this.

if i was interested in OMFS after dental school, have predents volunteered in the surgery center in hospitals? do surgery centers have oral surgeons?

i volunteered at a hospital and put it on my app. i worked in the nursery cuddling babies 🙂 . i was asked about it at penn, not because they saw it as a negative thing, but just because they were interested in hearing about my experience. definitely do it and put it on the app, there is nothing wrong with showing that you have a passion for working with people, a common goal for dentistry and medicine.

i agree with everyone here, it cant hurt. Really, it can only help. I had hospital volunteering and surgeon shadowing on my app and it wasnt an issue at all. In fact, i think it helps because if the medicine vs dentistry question comes up at an interview, the experiences you can talk about from your volunteer work shows that you are making a well informed decision. Just my two cents...
