I really don't know if i should be answering this thread, so I'm warning you now that I'm a high school student...=) Well the reason why I'm answering this is because I'm in a pre-med summer program at ucla and I volunteer in the pharmacy as a part of the program. As for this pharmacy, most of the work gets done in the morning such as filing prescription papers, filling up empty bottle shelves, insurance papers, deliveries, and stocking new orders each day. But as for stocking medications, I really don't think that volunteers are suppose to be doing that for insurance and liability reasons though. Then again it varies from different pharmacies, depending where you want to volunteer. As for the place I volunteer, most of the work is finish before noon and the volunteers have nothing to do during the afternoon. I'm the only hs student there and the rest are in the same position you are and some are applying to pharm school also. Many college students volunteer in the pharmacy and from my conversations with them, they say it's an enjoyable experience. Other than that, there's really not much to do unless you shadow a certain pharmacist, but overall do it for your own personal saticfaction of volunteering and remember that the atmosphere you're presented with will also make a difference whether you enjoy it or not. Some pharmacists are really nice such as the ones I work with and others can just be really busy and not have the time, but that's okay because it's understandable. That's just from my experiences so remember that everyone is different and so are the pharmacies. I think shadowing would be the best if you can find someone like what LVPharm had said on his experiences. Just try it out, you have nothing to lose. I hope that was a little help to you.
