waitlist people--what about housing?

for all the people who are waiting to get off waitlists, what are you going to do about housing? from another thread, i read that we should look for an apartment at least 1 month before moving in. but what if you sign the lease in July sometime, then get off the waitlist somewhere else? Can you break the lease because you haven't moved in yet?

if you break the lease, it goes against your credit report and it doesn't look good. however, you can try to reason with the landlords in freeing you from the lease which will not affect your credit. it's a tough deal.
