cGPA and sGPA as calculated by AMCAS or AACOMAS cGPA is 3.67, BPCM is 3.52 and AACOMAS would be 3.71
MCAT score(s) and breakdown 503 127/123/126/127
State of residence or country of citizenship (if non-US) NY
Ethnicity and/or race Hispanic (Ecuadorian), and white
Undergraduate institution or category One of the CUNY's in NYC (a city college)
Clinical experience (volunteer and non-volunteer) About 200 hours of clinical volunteering at a public hospital in an underserved area.
Experience Ambassador - Observed clinical staff and their interactions with patients followed up by an interview with said patients about their experience at the hospital, and whatever was in my capacity to help their stay at the hospital. This was a part of a study done in the hospital to which I, later on, presented the data I collected to administrative staff
Patient Navigator - Escorted patients from the waiting areas to the appropriate rooms in the radiology department. I also recruited patients to use apps such as myChart and helped them set up accounts. Lastly, I helped the clinical staff with the paperwork around the department.
Research experience and productivity 600 hours of clinical research spread across two different opportunities
In my first research experience, I did a plethora of chart reviews as a follow-up study for patients who had undergone heart surgery and conducted patient interviews to gauge the success of the medical device installed during surgery. I had the opportunity to shadow these surgeries, but unsure if it can count toward my shadowing hours. In my current research, I do mostly wet lab by blood processing and making mice models of cancer.
Shadowing experience and specialties represented 20 hours
I shadowed a relative who is a nephrologist and another relative who is an anesthesiologist. However, I am looking for more shadowing which is to come soon.
Non-clinical volunteering 500 hours
A good portion of this comes from my volunteering at a local bike shop where I rebuild bikes for yearly events that are given to children for free typically in underserved neighborhoods. I also mentor freshmen in college with regard to their pre-health pathway.
Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc)
About 1500 hours of paid work. I have been working as a bike instructor teaching children and adults how to ride bikes for a few years, have worked as a bike mechanic, and also as an associate loaning out free bikes to the public for some time.
I will be taking one gap year hopefully as a research associate to accrue more clinical interaction and diversify my non-clinical experiences.
Relevant honors or awards
Dean's list for about 3 semesters if that counts for anything!
Anything else not listed you think might be important
I am yet to graduate college (if all goes well, cGPA will go to a 3.72). Currently starting my last semester and was curious if I might even be competitive if I were to apply strictly DO, and if I am perhaps a draft school list would be appreciated! My current LORs are strong. Any advice on making my application stronger would be greatly appreciated as well!
