Hi guys,

I will applying MD only (as of now) in the next 2023-2024 cycle as a first time applicant. I am a rising senior, and thus will be taking one gap year. My info is as follows:

1. sGPA and cGPA: 4.0 (Biomedical Engineering Major)
2. MCAT: 515 (129/126/129/131)
3. State: NJ
4. Ethnicity/Race: South Asian
5. Undergrad: Public University (not very prestigious but top 100 school)
6. Clinical Experience: 1000+ hours as a volunteer EMT in my town with leadership positions
7. Research Experience: approximately 600-700 hours doing clinical engineering research at a nonprofit, 1 conference paper publication (did not present this), 1 in progress still
8. Shadowing experience: 93 hours shadowing a FM physician, 20 hours shadowing a GI (observed scoping procedures)
9. Non-clinical Volunteering: 120 hours 7Cups Virtual Volunteering (done through COVID period), 50 hours volunteering at a Food Bank, 50 hours in miscellaneous activities like community service with fraternity, and tutoring (self-diagnosed weakness of my application, and I do plan to bring these hours up this summer, into the school year, and through the gap year)
10. Other activities: I am planning on pursuing AmeriCorps or another service related program during my gap year.
11. Awards: nothing extremely notable
12. Other activities: Student Government, Community Service Chair of fraternity, Tennis Coach

Just started making a school list and here is what I have:

You could add these schools to your application:
Hofstra
Rochester
Mount Sinai
Boston University
Tufts
George Washington
Tufts
Cincinnati
Western Michigan
USF Morsani
Miami

If you are not applying until next year, then I want to know what Americorps opportunity you secure before making any judgments on your chances, but immersing yourself in this opportunity is going to be critical. Otherwise your significant non-clinical community service really is your food bank experience. (Tutoring goes under "teaching.")

Hi Mr. Smile,

Thanks for the reply. If I secure the opportunity and lets say its full-time after graduation, will it still have an impact on my application given I will be essentially starting the program while applying. I will be graduating in May 2023 and because of school, I do not think I can start any earlier than this. But, I definitely do agree that minimal nonclinical volunteering might be an issue.

I wouldn't recommend a full-time Americorps job before you graduate. I'm not sure that's allowed anyway.

I've seen many applicants with Peace Corps or Fulbright fellowships applying right when they start. They have all/most their ducks in a row when it comes to their essays (including secondaries) and LORs before they start. They tend to do fairly well, and with online interviewing, I'm sure we can do better to accommodate these applicants than we did in the pre-Zoom/online interview days. (I'm sure a few adcoms did a one-off interview with such candidates during the 2010's.) So you need to get to networking now with schools you are interested in. I would also check which schools would require you to submit an Altus assessment and plan to schedule your attempt in April or May; PREview 2023??? who knows; Kira Talent... asynchronous or synchronous? I would also see if there are Americorps alumni in medical schools (on your list) and ask how they navigated the process.
