Hi everyone! I’m planning to apply this cycle but looking for improvement. I’m 22 F, mostly traditional. I’m in NY resident. Graduated undergrad Spring 2022. I actually am currently employed full time at a vet school and I help teach vet students clinical skills with large animals.

Cumulative GPA: 3.55
Science GPA: 3.65
Last 45: 3.65
Science Prerequisite: ~3.45

Applying:
Iowa, Wisconsin, Virginia-Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Ohio (not finalized will add more)

Degree:
BS Animal Science

GRE: probably not taking

Vet Experience:

-400 hrs small animal GP
-600 hrs large animal (various things)

-6 hrs shelter med

Animal Experience:

- 350 hrs lab animal care tech (rodents and exotics)
-4000 hours farm animal caretaker ( for a vet school’s animals)
-700 hours as a kennel tech for boarding facility (dogs and cats)
- 60 hours large animal lab assistant
-100 hours pet sitting

Was on exec board for all of these orgs

Awards/ scholarships

-Dean’s list few times
- College Freshman Honor Society
-Greek Honor Society

Non Animal Employment:
-1000 hours at local restaurant as cashier / FOH
- 500 hours product warehouse facility

Volunteer Work:

-probably 200 hours all together, various things from HS to college like adopt a highway or fundraising or community engagement. Have to list it all out. My sorority did a lot of service work.

Concerns:
Low vet hours/ lack of diversity. Had a hard time finding vet employment during Covid ( I’m from a big city). I want to do large animal/ production animal. I have tons of large animal experience but only 2 vet experiences with large animals. I would like to get more small animal hours but with my full time job it’s been proven difficult. Hoping to get 200-300 more by the time I apply.

Grades. I have a few Cs in my science pre reqs. Orgo, Biochem. I’m retaking biochem and Orgo now, it’s going well! Doubting if I should even apply this cycle, don’t feel like a competitive enough applicant.

I think you should also consider UMN and SDSU. They will take your grade replacements as well as Iowa. LMU is also a good option for your interest and tuition cost is lower than many OOS schools. You have good GPAS, and I would definitely apply. Maybe consider some experience in public health with your interest in production animals ( my primary interest as well). I think you have good varied experience, and this will really help you! A lot of applicants have very little to no large animal experience. A good personal statement will help as well and focus on your large animal/ production animal interest. Having experiences over a long period of time with help too even if you do not have a lot of hours in that experience. It shows that you were interested and continued to be interested. I would also consider joining a pre- health/ biology/ chemistry club if available. Add some hobbies too and be detailed in your experiences. You’ll do great!
