Date of submission: Submitted late August/early Sep for 2021-2022, will submit early for 2022-2023
Overall GPA: 3.4 (undergrad 3.5, grad 3.3)
Science GPA: 3.10 (undergrad 3.04, grad 3.3)
Bio-Chem-Physics GPA: 3.0 (undergrad 2.87, grad 3.3)
DAT score (include AA and all sections): 21 AA, 21 TS, 20 bio, 21 GC, 21 OC, 27 RC, 17 QR, 18 PAT
State of Residence: SC

Undergrad Attended: in-state liberal arts school, grad at flagship state school (masters in biomedical sciences)
Major: Biology and Spanish
Minority? No, asian, 1st gen
Reapplicant? Yes for 2022-2033
Nontrad? no

Shadowing Experience: 130 (100 general, 30 oral surgery)

Volunteering Experience: 500+ through food pantry and philanthropy related efforts with student gov, sorority, and church

Employment: Student assistant for Student affairs and admissions offices throughout college. Medical scribe (one summer and one semester). Nanny/babysitting part-time/as needed for multiple families over the past 4 years.

Research: 45 hours in biology lab, no pub or presentations. 100 hours for anthropology research, no pub or presentations

Other Extracurriculars: 160 hours intern for biotech company, study abroad 3x with medical related experiences, Vice president, secretary, and class rep of student body/SGA, VP of sorority, secretary of two graduate student organizations. Speak 2 other languages @ intermediate levels. Dexterity: can play harmonium, learning guitar, sewing, threading.

Relevant Honors or Awards: two leadership awards (one freshman year, one at graduation), one award for study abroad, dean's list

LOR type and strength: One grad professor, one undergrad professor, one dentist, one leadership advisor. All strong LOR

Misc Info/Things not stated elsewhere/Red Flags: pre med during undergrad, applied to med schools 2 times with sub 50 percentile scores due to familial pressure/unsure of what else to pursue. I know I have to disclose if I applied to other health professional schools in the past but I feel like this really hurt my application this year. I know they want to see commitment to dentistry though. Head injury during college and switched medications, impacted 2 higher level classes = low BCP GPA. Undergrad did +/- and had majority B/B- in sciences due to not studying correctly/not asking for help/test anxiety. B+/A towards senior year.
Retook most classes during grad and made A's and one B but fumbled the bag for one class and made a C (made a B in the class previously during undergrad) which has lowered my grad GPA because I was debating whether to take DAT during semester or summer. Took DAT over summer, waited to submit application after receiving scores. Felt though DAT compensated or balanced out any GPA issues. I did a lot of soul searching before studying for the DAT and I think my motivation for pursuing dentistry helped motivate me to study and do well on the DAT whereas I did not have this same feeling previously when studying for med school.

School list:
2021-2022
DCG (rejected)
USC (under review)
Marquette (under review)
MUSC (interviewed in November, denied Feb) (strong ties, will apply again)
Meharry (under review)
Nova (rejected)
UAB (under review)
UNC (under review)
Pitt (under review)
UTHSC (rejected)
VCU (rejected)
WVU (rejected)
Tufts (under review)

2022-2023
same schools, would prefer to stay in-state or in southeast but willing to go any where.
adding
Boston University
Midwestern- Illinois
NYU
University of Louisville
Maybe Temple and Touro

Waiting to see if I should re-take and what to do post-graduation after I receive feedback from schools. Ideally, I would like to attend the in-state school because my significant other also attends. The dentist that wrote my LOR has strong ties to that school. Undergrad professor was previously there too.

meharry when you are not a URM is a pretty far reach
as is UNC with your stats
you need a broader and smarter school list...

What else would you suggest I add? I didn't have time to take CASPER this cycle so I suppose I can for this upcoming cycle and apply to those schools as well.

UNC, USC, UAB, UTHSC, DCG were stretches but I applied anyways just to see.

I would be interested in the feedback you get from your in-states with whom you interviewed.
I will reach out to them in mid-March for feedback and next steps. I hope if they wanted me to re-take DAT, they would have told me sooner. In terms of after graduation, I will ask them what I should do if they have a preference or what will strengthen my application at all.

USC was not a reach
the issue is that you had too many public schools relative to how many private schools you had

I will most likely add-
Boston University
Midwestern- Illinois
NYU
University of Louisville
Maybe Temple and Touro
High Point University (if they are going to enroll for 2023)

Basic points- the applicant pool was large and competitive. average accepted cGPA, sGPA around 3.6. AA: 20, PAT: 21.

I was told as for me, DAT AA was good. It is up to me whether I want to retake to have a higher PAT score. I am weighing the pros and cons.
When I reapply, I need to make sure to emphasize improvements in my GPA, emphasize continued shadowing hours, and include knowledge I have gained from work. Essentially, the committee will look at how I have improved year to year and emphasized applying as early as possible. I asked about if applying to med school was a deterring factor, and I was told that getting an interview an achievement and emphasizing my improvements will be really important.

@Mr.Smile12 what would you suggest I do as a re-applicant? I don’t want to risk re taking and not doing as well just to bring the PAT score up.

I can apply early and start studying depending on what job hires me and how much time I have. I am currently working in a contracted role as a grants advisor and applying for many full time research specialist roles.

How were your practices prior to taking the DAT? I know there aren't many options for practice tests, but I just wanted to be sure. Also what did you use to prepare for the PAT? In other words, do you think you can do significantly better?

That said, I would certainly want to be more financially set if you can. Applying early is going to be an important step to take. Stay focused on dental and don't try to mix in a med school application. If you need to pause and not apply this year to give yourself more time to think about the next step, don't hesitate to do that.

Similar TS scores, higher on QR and 18-20 on PAT. I used bootcamp. I feel like maybe I could but when I studied last summer, that was the only thing I did. I didn't work during that time.

I definitely will re-apply early.

Are you implying that meharry isn’t a school For people with good stats?
