Demographics: 21M, URM (Latino), Military Vet, young parent, CA Resident.

MCAT: 509

cGPA: 3.80 (would be a 3.9X but I had one 3.0 quarter cus I got pulled out for most of a quarter for military drills).

Clinical-volunteer hours: 300 in an ER

Shadowing: 88 hours (across EM, rheumatology, HemOnc, IM, Family Med, Endocrinology, and NSGY).

Non-clin volunteering: 180 (50 hours food bank, 50 hours community cleanups from time in military, 40 hrs as a physical training leader for military unit, 40 hours as a social media ambassador for my community college).

Research: 630hrs, in a lab focused on neuro-effects of social stigmatization against latinos; as well as honors thesis and clinical research described below.

Leadership: Had the main “leader” position during all of military time (basic training and tech school). Also did a year as a senator in my student government before joining the military and was a member of the honor society at my school for a year.

Publication: as of right now: submitted 4th-author on a clinical paper in the journal of clinical oncology about finding a new possibly associated protein with a certain pathology.

Other ECs: Earned a grant to attend the social affective neuroscience conference. Got “hand-selected” for a UCLA SOM-partnered program to present clinical studies to faculty. Shadowed UCLA SOM faculty in a similarly competitive program.

Other considerations: took MCAT without almost all the pre-reqs, also had like a month and a half to study since we were buying a home at the time and I was separating from the military. Had a kid at 17 and grew up mostly in a single parent low-income home. Lastly, it feels like almost every semester for the first 3 years of undergrad had a unique story (ex: had to take final exams a month early to ship out for basic training, using up all my vacation days so that I can attend lectures for a semester, commuting 2 hours each way to school so that my daughter can live near family, not going to lecture for a whole semester due to military drills, etc)

Welcome to the forums, and thank you for your service to our nation.

1) Have you completed all of your prerequisites? What prerequisites were missing when you took the MCAT? Why did you take the MCAT before you had all the courses completed?

2) Have you qualified for the Fee Assistance Program? Were you ROTC (I presume from your username that is not the case)?

3) Are you eligible for HPSP? What purpose do you see yourself as a physician?

1) I'm in the middle of finishing OChem 3 and will be taking biochem/Ochem lab in the fall. I was missing all of Ochem, biochem, and 2/3 of physics. I had already planned on taking the MCAT the summer before application season, as I was/am taking about 19 units/quarter to ensure that I finish my degree on time - ultimately to matriculate on time (I was against taking a gap-year since my family and I rely on my GI Bill, which means I have to be in school).

2) No FAP, my mother made a tiny amount too much, and since I'm under 25, they will not consider me independent (thanks AAMC). No ROTC, just enlisted.

3) Yes I am eligible for HPSP, although I am leaning more towards the army reserve option. I would like to serve as a psychiatrist (my narrative mainly revolves around seeing how PTSD and other mental health disorders affected my family members, and how I would like to help that patient population).
