Hello,

I’m disheartened from not getting accepted this fall after 2 interviews and a waitlist on a top 40 school. I retook the MCAT recently to improve my CARS.

MCAT New 506(127/124/128/127) from 509(127/122/129/131) first cycle
(Happy about the CARS bump despite the overall drop)
3.55 cGPA 3.6 sGPA no trend
500H transport department volunteering
400H hospice volunteering
250H non clinical volunteering
35H shadowing, no PC
2 years full time preclinical research (1 presentation, no pubs)
2 semesters tutoring ORGO
AA Male
State of residence is Delaware

How does this school list for applying next summer look, and what are my chances? Any advice?

School List:
Howard
Morehouse
Drexel
New York Medical College
Albany
Penn State
Rush
Tufts
Emory
University of Iowa
Vermont
Southern Carolina
Miami
VCU
Ohio state
George Washington
UCLA
Pittsburgh
Temple
Wake Forest
Loyola
Meharry
West Virginia
Medical College of Wisconsin
Rosalind Franklin
Oakland University
Yale (I heard they like hospice experience)
Vanderbilt (They superscore, so that would put me at 511 by their standards)
Jefferson
USC
Georgetown
U Conn
U Arizona Tucson

Thank you in advance!

Your list was top heavy but I see another 12+ schools where you could receive interview invites in the next 2 months. There will be many more acceptances offered by next June. Give us an update in March when the interview season is over.

Thank you. I am actually not currently applying this cycle. I first applied in the 2018-2019 cycle. I will reapply for the 2020-2021 cycle.

Do you think my MCAT CARS held me back the first time? Do you think my new MCAT score is better even though it is lower?

No, you’re expected to improve on a retake. Your new MCAT score doesn’t make much of a difference. It might be a good idea to have DO schools on your list if you really want to get in next time around, although as a URM with a 3.5/506 you are competitive for HBCUs and your state schools, and maybe some midtiers. Yale’s a reach for you, though.

@Goro and @gyngyn
Would either of you be willing to provide insight on my situation/ on my current school list?

I agree. Add UCLA/Drew, IU and U Miami to the list, and DO schools.
I can't recommend Touro-NY, Nova, Wm Carey, LUCOM, for different reasons. MSUCOM? Read up on Larry Nasser and you decide. LMU has an accreditation warning, which concerns me. CalHS is too new and appears to be too limited in rotations sites.
