Chance Me Demographics: Asian Male at top public university. Graduated in 2021 and finishing first of two gap years. Listed as CT resident and grew up there but lived in Maryland for the past year.
GPA: 3.83 cumulative and 3.74 science with upward trend MCAT: 509 (127/125/127/130)
Research:
- Full time research (1000 hours, 2000 by matriculation) as NIH postbac doing behavioral neuroscience research with animal models. Presented at NIH postbac poster day, no pubs but should have one by the end of the year.
⁃ Alzheimer's Disease Research: Submitted abstract and did video presentation for a medical imaging conference based on this work. Received a competitive internship through my university that gave me a stipend for this research. Also received summer grant that covered tuition cost of doing research for credit over a summer.
⁃ 50 hours clinical research with a cardiologist. Project was presented by someone else at a national conference.
Clinical Experience: ⁃ 30 hours volunteering at inpatient physical therapy department in a hospital. ⁃ 60 hours volunteering at hospital trauma unit. 100 more projected.
Nonclinical Volunteering: ⁃ 145 hours delivering groceries to inner city food bank. Promoted to volunteer coordinator.
Shadowing: ⁃ 52 hours across three specialties Other:
⁃ 300 hours as Vice-President in a service organization. Wrote 6 grants that resulted in $5k being raised to build water pumps in a poor country.
⁃ Leadership Board of Asian American Students Association: 250 hours
⁃ Research Ambassador - helped first years get involved in undergrad research.
⁃ Work experience: Waiter at a restaurant for a semester during my freshman year.
Personal Statement / Narrative: Ties together experiences including Alzheimer’s + neuroscience research, volunteering with populations suffering from drug addiction, and family member with Alzheimer’s. Reason for medicine is to restore the personal agency people have lost, especially to mental illnesses, through healthcare.
