- 3.63 cGPA and 3.59 sGPA. B.S. in Biochemistry with an upward grade trend. My GPA is most negatively affected from when I attended community college for ~1 year before stopping for 2 years. Decided I wanted to pursue medicine and came back to school where I was a much better student.
- 507 MCAT (126/128/127/126). I was scoring between 510-512 on practice tests, but did not have a great test day and suffered ~1 point/section. I was considering retaking but with everything happening and tests being cancelled, I'm not sure.
- Oregon Resident
- ORM White Male 26 Y/O
- 1 year Community College, 3 years at Portland State University where I received my degree.
- Clinical experience (volunteer and non-volunteer)
- ~100 hours as a hospital volunteer. Most of these hours were in the Bone Marrow Transplant ward at OHSU. Most of this experience was face-to-face with patients and their families and helping nurses/CNAs with their work. I feel I had a lot of significant experiences from this opportunity and could easily write about it. Most recently, the volunteering opportunity has shifted to helping the hospital with the pandemic by helping perform new patient symptom screenings and assisting with enforcing the new visitation policies.
- Shadowing experience and specialties represented
- ~40 hours with a Pathologist/Transfusion medicine MD.
- Non-clinical volunteering
- ~80 hours with the Wombyns Wellness Garden at the Oregon Food Bank
- Other extracurricular activities
- ~2700 hours working as a clinical laboratory specialist testing blood donations for transfusions. The lab I worked in was formerly an American Red Cross lab, and I continued to work very closely with them after we were bought by a separate non-profit. I received a bit (~40 hours) of training and continuing education during this time about transfusion and transplant medicine, blood banking, and immunology/pathology.
- Anything else not listed you think might be important
- 5-6 letters of Rec., all of them pretty strong letters from people who know me well. 3 from school faculty, 1 from the MD I Shadowed, and 1-2 from directors from my work (I have been promised letters from both individuals, but I'm unsure of how helpful/relevant they might be in my application. Thoughts?).
- Besides the 2 years before returning to school, I'm currently applying during my 2nd gap year after graduating in 2018.
