Hi all, just joined SDN today and I would really appreciate some feedback on my application and making a school list. I'm planning on applying this cycle and currently having a lot of trouble with the schools, I'm not sure which ones I'm competitive at and which are reaches. Thank you everyone for all your help. Undergrad: UCLA
URM: No, asian male
Year in School: Graduated late 2019
Undergraduate Major(s)/Minor(s): Molecular Biology

AMCAS GPAs: cGPA: 3.82; ⁠sGPA: 3.84
MCAT Score(s): 518 (130/127/130/131)

Research Experience:
  • ~200 hours at Biochemistry lab, no publications or posters and just did bench work really
  • ~900 hours (2 years) at Cardiology lab, 1 publication in medium impact journal, 3 poster presentations with 1 at a major international conference
Clinical Experience (paid or volunteer):
  • ~1000 hours as medical assistant at private practice, will be working into the next year and listed future hours on app
  • 230 hours clinical volunteering at community hospital rotating through different departments.
Physician Shadowing:
  • 80 hours shadowing ophthalmologist
Non-Clinical Volunteering:
  • 120 hours volunteering at free clinic, gave out toiletries to underserved population
  • Just started volunteering with habitat for humanity, planning to continue into next year but not sure schools will care
Other Extracurricular Activities:
  • Spent 1 quarter (100 hrs) as a learning assistant for lower-div biology
Awards:
  • Dean's list throughout freshman and sophomore year, skipped junior year and then senior year made dean's list again
  • Chancellor's list during sophomore year for 3.9+

Hobbies: Basketball, been playing ever since I was a kid. Definitely poured a lot of hours into this I just put 1000 hrs on my application
Immediate family members in medicine? (Y/N): No
Additional Info: Downward trend for GPA from sophomore-junior year as I transferred to UCLA from another UC, but picked back up senior year

Your stats and activities are very strong. Your list so far is okay, but you should aim for at least 25 total, because part of this is just luck of the draw.
